Do they have their towns listed? Laidley is closed off, people can only try to head for higher ground, no way to get out of town (FB friends and their kids are in that town). Apparently they're expecting possible trouble with a new spillway on Wivenhoe dam--Lake Wivenhoe is apparently at 200% capacity.

Not a good situation!

Dilutes Mon, 01/10/2011 - 22:12

Thanks hon, we're okay here, including our four leggeds. We're on high ground 15 minutes out of Maryborough.
I'm waiting to hear how some family and friends are :/

For those, this gives a good idea of what we're going through in Qld (and some parts of New South Wales, another state which will get worse too).

http://www.facebook.com/notes/horses-fo…" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

There was 8 deaths confirmed but not long ago they confirmed another five :( I know at least four of the deaths in total were children.

It just feels so surreal watching the news and reading updates. It's just terribly sad and worrying for us here in Qld.

I hope all our other members dealing with this, are okay.

Thank God! I feel so useless down here but have plenty of friends in the "firing line". Was looking for you on cyber and eques so glad you're ok!!! How horrific..... I don't know what to say...

Dilutes Tue, 01/11/2011 - 17:21

I know at least one of the evactuation centres had filled up last night so they had to bus some people to a near by church.
Originally they wouldn't let you take dogs or cats but now they're allowing you to if the dogs on a lead and the cat is caged.
It's just so heart breaking for so many people.

I am so glad you guys are okay - Thank God! So, now here is a question for you ladies, is there any room at your places to help any of those poor misplaced animals until their owners can get settled back in? I am sure there are quite a few that managed to load up their animals to get out, but now have no place to keep them. I know here when there is any type of disaster (flood, fire, snow/ice), we just call the local animal control making the offer and they put the word out to rescue teams for anyone looking for temporary placement.

Hi Critter Keeper
I've already offered my back paddock, which is up on a hill with a dam and pretty good grazing for up to three horses and I've offered to throw out hay if they can supply it. Only because I can't afford to pay for hay for three extra horses. I've listed this several times where a lot of people can read it.

I would love to offer a bed to someone but we are renting a quite small two bedroom house and the spareroom is used as extra storage for us. I have donated money but wish I could have donated more but I lost just over a week's wage by not being able to get to work. Nothing to complain about that's for sure.

I'm driving into town today to do a food shop for a friend who is completely cut off. A food drop off has been arranged and I assume they will boat it over to her. I went food shopping yesterday and there is no bread or milk (no long life milk or milk powder either) & no eggs. Aldi supermarket had no meat to cook nor any fresh fruit or vegatables. They did have some small packets of sandwich meats. Coles supermarket had a little bit of meat, mostly small packs of pork and no chicken at all. I think what meat they had will have been sold by today. They did have a limited choice of fruit and veg and I'd say that most, if not all of it will be sold out by today. I was so lucky to get the last bag of self raising flour. They had a few bags of plain flour but no yeast left.

I did manage to get some cream and I bought long life soya mik and almond milk. If I get desperate, I figure I could add a bit of the cream to it to try and make it a bit more cow's milk like. Yeah it probably won't taste anything like cow's milk

ROFLMAO, nope that still won't taste like "real" milk. I am blessed that we have a network of friends, family and neighbors who have an assortment of livestock that have in the past been slaughtered for food (I pick up my fresh pork tomorrow, curtesy of our s-i-l's sister & bil - lol) and I have 18 laying hens (even in this cold we are getting 1/2 doz. eggs a day). Our "hay man" is not only selling the hay at cost, but delivering it free of charge as well. It just goes to show that in times of crisis, the goodness in humanity WILL shine.

Oh and as to having a small place, I know your pain...even our smallest barn is bigger than the house (less than 630 sqft), that is why the "highway group" stayed in the neighbors 6-man camper (he already had his house full). Nearly every house on the surrounding area had "guest" of some sort or another...

A lot of people have come forward to help in all sorts of ways! ( I'm in Tassie so am no physical use but donations on the way) The size of the area affected is just phenominal!! I can't find a map at the moment to show you but the way I'd describe how much is flooded is more than the whole of California plus!!

supaspot60 Fri, 01/14/2011 - 12:25

Ive been following it on the news and have been so worried for you all , I look out of the window and see plenty of grass and wish I could put those evacuated horses in there , I was very sad to hear about a miniature horse stud that ws completely swept away and all minis were lost :-(
Hugs to you all X

Danni Fri, 01/14/2011 - 14:07

Oh it's just so sad all the horses lost, watching the news with horses trying to find somewhere to rest by putting their heads on the roofs of submerged houses etc.. So many don't survive, I get upset seeing it all. But I still watch

I'm probably in one of the drier areas of eastern Australia at the moment, no floods near me! Nice big hill I live on too, but I know so many people affected. Very sad.

critterkeeper Fri, 01/14/2011 - 18:46

And with such wide-spread devastation, I have no doubt the aftermath will last for sometime to come -- mostly with loss of life, homes, crops, livestock and income coupled with higher prices on everything....:sad

critterkeeper Sat, 01/15/2011 - 19:48

I see where some of the games on Facebook are taking up donations for the flood victims (and at least in Zoo World you get to CHOOSE what agency gets your donation - I picked the Queensland RSPCA)

Dilutes Mon, 01/17/2011 - 03:45

Oh that's great critterkeeper

I've seen some pics and video of some horses in a very bad way. These were horses that were rescued in the flood waters by a boat and two men. The horses had been hanging thier heads over the gutters of some house roofs whilst madly treading water. They towed the horses a kilometre until they reached high ground. At least they're getting the vet treatment they so badly need. The poor things have dropped a lot of weight very quickly and were cut up very badly.

Yes the price of quite a few things have gone up. There has been profiteering going on across the state but there are big fines and quite a few have been reported.

As there should be...there was a "builder" (and I think I use the term loosely, since he didn't want to be ID'd) in a news article who was complaining that Fletcher Building, the main 'project manager' for the Earthquake Commission work in Christchurch, is paying "too little" for the work--apparently $45 an hour is "too little", despite there being guaranteed work for the next couple, five years.

:-t Tell that "builder" that there are a few hundred thousand American builders who would LOVE that contract if he isn't interested....I am sure they will relocate with very little incentive... :hammer

NZ Appaloosas Wed, 01/19/2011 - 20:52

Heck, it's almost enough to make me want to go learn how to be a builder (and I doubt he's actually one cuz he was ID'd as "self-employed" rather than as a business owner--he's probably just a construction worker, and I know my stepson wasn't making that kind of money before the quake damage, and he's a "deputy" foreman [the guy the foreman leaves in charge when the foreman has to go off to other jobsites]).
