Brindle Thoroughbred

http://drf.com/news/article/114350.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; The Daily Racing Form was kind enough to run an article on the racing brindle TB Remark - she's, well, remarkable (I hope the link will work - not sure if you need to be a free drf.com 'member,' but you might). Here are a few pics of her, and the unraced Slewcy's Gale (age 15) - for those who find brindles interesting. Just click on little photos to see them large: http://barbaradlivingston.photoshelter.com/gallery/Remark-and-Slewcys-G…" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Thanks again for the ideas re the possible chimerism!

I am just not sure the first one is Brindle though...something strange about it - could well be Chimeric as could the older mare but that first one is...werid !! :?

I asked two color experts who both agreed she's brindle before I wrote the article, and her marks/swirls are very similar to other known brindles. I've photographed several others, and even superimposed shots of Remark over those of Natal Clasi - finding them surprisingly similar (she has fewer stripes, though).

I've never seen random birthmarks in drippy striped patterns that are a trademark of brindle, and brindles do occasionally have stripes on just one side - such as Angela's TB and Slewcy's Gale (http://www.brindlehorses.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;). I did research through the Jockey Club, the Keeneland Library, two horse identifiers, the color experts, and several veterinarians and equine consultants.

She was born with the stripes.

(the brindle site would also consider her a 'partial brindle,' but that seemed to be getting in too deep for the basic racing racing crowd ;) )

What do you think she is? I do agree she's weird, though.

This color stuff always leads me to ulcers.... :hammer Hats off to all of you who stick with it!

I don't see any reason to think she's not brindle. The brindle site shows load of horses only brindled in certain areas. I do feel it's very likely she is chimeric, however she's still brindle (you would indeed call Dunbar's Gold brindle correct?). As Gander said, the markings are identical in every way to known brindles.

The fact that it's almost completely only on one side is seriously interesting and -to me- would be of note. If brindle were a pattern, I'd subscribe to that being it or a relative. Due to it's placement, it certainly does not appear to indicate any sort of regular skin issue and the track of it is not a normal skin type thing....
