I think this horse is

I think this horse is actually a very faded black.  Of course you would need to test to know for sure.  I've seen several fade this bad in the past.  The reason I think this is the pattern of brownish markings on the face.  They seem to match the pattern for fading more than he pattern for brown.  I am also not seeing the characteristic brown markings behind on the stifle and elbow.

I've seen black horses with

I've seen black horses with no cream gene fade this bad so don't count on the cream.  For example this boy tested Ee aa with no cream.  He has roan of course but you can still see the fading.  He fades really bad as an adult as well.  Very similar to yours above, but I don't have a photo of it.

Thanks.  It's seeming like he's a typical black yearling with lots of fading.

If you'd like to try to keep

If you'd like to try to keep him from fading in the future you might try paprika or a high copper supplement.   I've never tried any of them but many people claim they help.  If he is just a yearling, he may not fade as bad as an adult as well.

I'm excited to see what color

I'm excited to see what color he is next spring when he sheds out as a two year old.  I think he's just doing a typical baby fade, per comments.
