New foal, What Colour???

:toast OK, my mare foaled last night, the first foal by my black silver colt & out of bay silver mare. Hmm, well, in the light of the torch, I was sure he was silver, he had a real chocolate sort of look about him. I carried him to the stable, as we have been having alot of rain & lots of mud around. So I leave him & mum to get to know each other & go inside for a while. Come back a bit later to see how he is going & lol, I am horribly disappointed to see that he looks like a very dark bay. He is a lovely foal, but I was really hoping for silver. Anyway, on closer inspection, there are a few unusual things about him. His tail is pretty much cream all through & his legs are not the baby silver of all of the bay foals I have seen, they are cream/mushroom coloured. His mane is not black, it is chocolate coloured. He is certainly not like any of the other bay foals I have had born. :rofl Mind you, I know that doesn't mean he isn't bay. Does anyone think he could be silver???? I think if he is bay, he is going to shed out dark brown/seal. Ah well, I guess I can live in hope till a test tells me he is only bay. Anway, here are some pics, a bit hard to get accurate ones, due to being inside. This is his tail. Legs, in real life they are more yellowy, a bit like a pale pally. Body

I think he is a silver bay (well, silver brown). Foals can have light tails without silver obviously, but I dunno, I just think he looks silver. Especially as you say with his bit lighter mane too.

Oh he's cute too, congratulations!!! :)

Dilutes Sun, 08/15/2010 - 22:54

Maybe he'll have similar silver dilution to his father? Instead of being black though, seal brown.
He is definately a cutey!

thorwood Sun, 08/15/2010 - 23:16

Yes, I have had plenty of bay & buckskin foals with light tails, but it looks like silvery frosting. This tail is cream. His hooves are chocolate coloured & his legs like nothing I have ever seen before on a bay foal. Still doesn't mean he isn't bay/brown.
:bounce Mind you, as much as I want him to be silver, he won't be until I get a test result back that says he is.

Hmm, is it mean to pull hair from a day old foal????

Here is another pic, just because. He has a wonderful front for a newborn foal.

Wow, doesn't he just!

Songcatcher Mon, 08/16/2010 - 06:07

I don't see Silver, but he is unusual. He DOES have a very nice head and neck.

I have difficulty pulling hairs on a very new foal. They seem to break off easily and not get the roots. Anxious to see the results though.

Bannerminis Mon, 08/16/2010 - 08:29

He is beautiful - I hope he is silver but its hard to call it. If you are going to pull hairs I always find the best ones to take are the tail hairs they seem to be stronger then the mane hairs

tbtash Mon, 08/16/2010 - 22:55

Congrats Thorwood! I just love your silver Stallion :-D
This little guy is a ripper and that tail...very sus..I reckon you have a silver dilute there for sure :toast

thorwood Tue, 08/17/2010 - 01:14

I took some pics of him outside today, gives a better idea of colour than in the stable.
Will post them later.

He has a name now, Thorwood Candyman (Sammy). Mum's name is Sanlirra Candygirl, someone on another forum suggested it & it suits him down to the ground.

thorwood Tue, 08/17/2010 - 06:15

Here are today's pics.

Face, I don't know if it shows in the photo, but round his eyes where the coat is short & smooth is a chocolate colour.

Legs & tail.

Well, from today's pictures, I can't see the mane well, but the rest of it looks like a good possibility of Silver Bay.

rabbitsfizz Wed, 08/18/2010 - 13:46

Knowing you already have the stallion that does not look Silver, but is, I would say there is a good chance this little man is as well. You have some beautiful ponies, I wish I were in the market, I really do!
As to Brown, my understanding was that Brown foals had a nose muff....does this disappear when Silver is in the mix?

accphotography Wed, 08/18/2010 - 14:22

That foal does have a nose muff IMO, although it is much less obvious in the newer pics.

No doubt in my mind silver is present.

thorwood Wed, 08/18/2010 - 19:02

Yes, he definitely has paler nose. I have no doubt whether he is silver or not, that he is brown & will be quite dark. Along his back & neck he is very dark.
OH, raising the "brown" topic again, this is the 2nd brown foal this mare has had to a homozygous black stallion, & although carrying silver, she looks like a very typical red bay.
According to the theory she must be brown then, have I got that right!!!! She never changes colour, stays the same light reddish colour all year round. When she was younger she had the dappled silver legs & striped brown feet.

Here is a body colour shot of mum.
Probably should have her tested for brown!!!!

LOL, Danni, who knows, like I said on the other bay/brown thread.
I can't really make sense of the whole brown thing.
I have another red bay mare out of two dark brown parents too!!!

thorwood Thu, 08/19/2010 - 03:40

:rofl OK, I have pulled out the hair. Shouldn't be long now, will send it tomorrow morning.

Poor little man, I felt a bit mean, he is so friendly, was happy having a scratch & a cuddle, & whammo, hair pulled out of his tail.
He forgave me though!!!

pablo Thu, 08/19/2010 - 05:19

Hi I know I am new to colour , so could someone explain to me why they suspect silver on this foal??? I don't see silver characteristics at all , am I missing something? Sorry ,I am just trying to learn .

thorwood Thu, 08/19/2010 - 05:44

Hi Pablo,

Well, just from what I have observed, silver on black is usually pretty easy to pick on a foal. Silver on bay, not so easy. Some look pretty much like chestnut foals.
The characteristics in this guy are pretty subtle & don't come across in the photos as they do in real life & I have to say,
I can't really explain it, but he is just not a typical bay foal & I have bred heaps of bay & brown foals.

The main things that point to silver to me are his creamy tail, his mane is chocolate coloured & his legs are creamy/mushroom colour.
However, being "atypical" doesn't discount him being an unusual shade of bay/brown. That's why I am testing him, so I know for sure.

I think there are people here with alot more experience with silver than me, hopefully they will come in & comment.

pablo Thu, 08/19/2010 - 05:50

Thank you thorwood ! Just when I think I have mastered a colour ,a new horse comes along and throws me off track! Lol!

Same here!
On all this brown stuff I'm just gonna close my eyes and plug my ears and ignore it until everything is like 100% known haha! Lalalala i can't hear you brown!

thorwood Thu, 11/25/2010 - 02:11

Crias, I started another thread for him with the results, but yes he has one copy of silver & is homozygous black with one copy of agouti.

Threnody Thu, 11/25/2010 - 18:59

Homozygous browns have been shown to likely be lighter than heterozygous brown. So that could theoretically be what happens when it appears that two browns produce a bay.

ACC has skills picking them out from bays, seriously.
