mini mare (pic added)

this mare is reg as chestnut flaxen her dam as " choc silver dapple" and her sire is solid black , when I saw her I thought silver bay but when I parted her coat the base of the hair is white ??? all four feet are striped

If the striped feet are solid, then silver is probably causing it.

dakotakdq Sat, 03/13/2010 - 23:58

so a chestnut with striped hooves (like an appy has?) could be a marker for silver?

there are 2 stock horses here that are chestnuts, both have striped hooves (one has no white whatsoever & one has 2 white socks in hind legs)
sire is a chestnut carring silver.

would they be chestnuts carrying silver?

Silver is not supposed to effect red based horses. However I'm not sure if there has been any research on whether it would effect the hooves or not. Another however, I've now seen a fair number of for sure non silver chestnuts with striped hooves.

Monsterpony Sun, 03/14/2010 - 04:34

No, striped hooves is not a sign of silver in chestnuts.

I have had a Chestnut from two Blacks, it's fairly common, especially if you don't want one!!
And yes, I would say more of my chestnuts had striped feet than did not...I have three Mini Chestnuts at present and they all have striped feet....althogh I have to say it is not the kind of heavy striping you get with Silver or Appy.

I forgot to attach the pic (DUH!) I still think the reg is wrong and that she is silver bay , I dont know why the base of the hairs are white , is that normal ?????

supaspot60 Mon, 03/15/2010 - 18:50

Thanyou ! The person who registered that mare as chestnut with flaxen has been breeding minis for over a decade ... I wonder how many others "chestnuts" he has registered :?

accphotography Mon, 03/15/2010 - 19:18

Bigger question is why the registry isn't spotting it when they send the photos in. *sigh* Although I'll admit I've seen numerous bay silvers BORN looking every bit chestnut. Maybe they're just registering too young.

Danni Mon, 03/15/2010 - 20:37

Yeh that's probably true, many do look chestnut for a while. Our pony society has been phasing out foal recording and we now have all mares have to be adult registered from birth and soon colts will be able to too. But they have to get a vet check before stallion rego at the moment so don't know how that will work :?

But anyway my point was I hate to think what's going to happen with colours now, it's bad enough already!

I think silver bay for sure.

As for the white in the coat, I think it's just to do with the winter coat. Our bay gelding gets it on his under belly in winter and he's a standard red bay.

Well, in all fairness, I have been breeding Minis since 1979 and I still registered a Dunalino as Palomino, and thought her to be so until she dropped me a Red Dun foal!!!
