I only ask as I have seen foals I thought were chestnut who ended up pally... and I have NO idea how to tell the difference.
Here is our new born, both parents are pally... her sire was so dark and iridescent

I vote dark pali (i.e. golden...hehe) as my first foal was the exact same color and she is definitely a golden (in my experience the more chestnut the foal looks the more golden the coat).

I also have had 2 Isabella pali foals (looked more like heavily creamed coffee...hard to see their white) and one midway between the two (more of a toasted color).

I can tell by your foals face/eyes (they look typical cream to me) and just the general undertone to her red...

Oh and here is a closeup of Goldie's head (Maya's Golden Hind) taken back in Sept when her owner was giving her a quick grooming (she does NOT like having her mane braided..hehe). He didn't do so hot a job of the brushing/braiding, but then he's only 5 1/2.

Thanks for that guys, she is defiantly more 'yellow' today and her little canons and fetlocks are now palomino coloured, not the cream of chestnut points and she has very molted skin on her little udder and inner thighs. Do some chestnuts have mottled skin?
I will up load some photos soon. :)
IF she is pally I will keep posting weekly updates of her in case there are more like me out there who have no idea.

The main things to look for in determining if a foal is palomino or chestnut is 1) coat color 2) eye color 3) skin color

1) Is the foal coat more reddish or does it have a pinkish or peach hue? 2) Are the eyes bluish? 3) Is the skin pink?

The problem is that there isn't a fool proof method (except testing). Horses can and do fool us and the best we can do is make an educated guess. It's not terribly uncommon for chestnut foals to be born with the above characteristics. They will often "darken" within a few days while the pally foal will take longer to develop dark skin and eyes.

That being said I can't make up my mind about your girl. In some photos I'm leaning toward palomino and others chestnut. For example in the last photos you posted the first one I lean towards palomino because she looks a bit pink but in the second she looks very red.

I'm not being much help am I?

:rofl

Right! I'm going out to inspectigate my baby girl and take some more photos. I don't mind if she is chestnut but of course I am hoping that she's Pally. Well, I guess she either is or isn't!

I think chestnut today. The computer is making all the images a bit more red when I save for web on this one, don't know how to stop colour alteration... but that aside... I'm going chestnut.

You could always pull hair and test. Might take a few weeks if you have to send it to the US but would get you (and the rest of us) out of our misery a bit sooner.

I reckon chestnut, she just doesn't seem 'peachy' enough? Critterkeeper's foal is dark peach colour? I reckon at birth it can be hard to tell the chestnuts from the dark pally foals, but the longer she goes without looking pally, the less likely she is. Keep in mind though I breed very few pallies, and ones I do get are very obvious pally!

BTW, she is gorgeous, congratulations!

I have been having the same probably..the first pic is of her eye when she was born and the other two were taken a few days ago.. she was born 9-18-2011.. I thought she was chestnut but the blue eyes have me confused..dam chestnut. Sire palomino .... very pretty foal keep us posted as she shedds out.

critterkeeper Mon, 10/24/2011 - 20:59

I agree, she should have changed to a lighter (i.e. peachier) shade by now...instead she is looking more chestnut every day. I also agree she is a stunning filly...you can always ship her my way...
