Hypotetical color of foal.

I'm sure I spelled that wrong, but I would like to know what you guys think the foal will look like from this pairing. Sire [IMG]http://i360.photobucket.com/albums/oo49/SpiffyGrl/Drifter/Drifter06-03-…] He is out of a black and white tobiano mare and by a buckskin (possible dunskin) tovero stallion Dam [IMG]http://i360.photobucket.com/albums/oo49/SpiffyGrl/Spiffy/Spiffy06-14-11…] She is out of a solid sorrel qh mare and by a black and white tobiano stallion. This is the dam's 2 year old gelding out of a black and white tobiano, for refrence of what she has thrown. She had 2 foals before this one, but both didn't make it. The first was a solid palomino (sp?) filly by a solid palomino qh stallion and the second was a solid chestnut/dark sorrel colt by a solid bay paint stallion. I have pics of the other 2, but they are sad to see. If anyone wants I can post them though. 2 year old gelding out of dam. Sire is E? Aa CcrC
Dam is ee Aa

Foal possibilities are:
Black
Bay
Chestnut
Smokey black
Buckskin
Palomino

If sire is EE, then no chestnut or palomino.
50% chance of tobiano on all the base colors.

ETA: Haven't had a hypothetical foal question in a while. I am getting out of practice.

critterkeeper Mon, 07/11/2011 - 11:30

The dam also carries agouti seeing as she had a bay minimal tobi foal by a black and white tobi...obviously the sire didn't carry agouti so the dam had to. This being so, the odds of an agouti carrying foal is increased.

Now for the hard questions, have both sire and dam been tested for LWO? We all know that a "solid" horse can carry frame (some without so much as a speck of white on them others with only a small star) and as this mare has already lost two foals, it wouldn't be worth the risk to lose another one.

Monsterpony Mon, 07/11/2011 - 14:34

You are right, CK. I actually thought that when I was doing the initial read through and then completely spaced when I typed it out. See, I am getting rusty.

SpiffyGrl Mon, 07/11/2011 - 18:17

A little more info? Okay.

Dam lost the first foal due to the foal being malpostioned. Second foal because of Fescue, my dad put a round bale in her pen with 'bad' Fescue in it, he soffiocated (sp?) on the bag.

Here are pics of the first and second foals.

I do also have a pic of the solid bay paint stallion, but I can't find one of the palomino QH stallion, his name is Zips Sugar Daddy and he's a gelding if anyone wants to look him up though.

Actually, we know the dam exactly based on the foals. The question is whether the sire is EE or Ee. Do you have any more info on his grandparents or any other foals he has on the ground specifically if he has any chestnut foals.

Edtited to add: He is HYPP N/N. Also he has a Half brother that is a palomino and a full sister, but I can't remember what color she is.

Unfortunately, both your stud's sire and dam have red in their lines so that doesn't help with the EE or Ee. And I just realized that your stud is a bay dun, not a buckskin. Man, I am slow today. So, redo:

Sire is E? Aa Dd (Bay dun)
Dam is ee Aa (Chestnut)

Foal possibilities are:
Black
Bay
Chestnut
Grullo
Bay dun
Red dun

If sire is EE, then no chestnut or red dun.
50% chance of tobiano on all the base colors listed.

We're getting closer to finding out what color and pattern this pairing will throw. We are counting down with 2 months left now.

SpiffyGrl Thu, 03/29/2012 - 11:53

I know! I'm uber excited and don't know if I will have any hair left at the end. FYI I have really long hair and that would be a LOT of hair pulling out to be bald in the end. LOL!

SpiffyGrl Wed, 04/04/2012 - 20:47

Guess I should give ya'll an update with pics. Lol!

She's starting a small bag (normal, sorry no pics of udder yet) and is cranky (also normal).

Here are some progressive pics of her, starting with some of her last summer before being bred.

Udder shot. It's small right now, but this will probably be used as a base for comparing her udder later on.
[IMG]http://i360.photobucket.com/albums/oo49…]

And what pic update would be complete without a WooHoo shot! Lol! Another shot for base comparision for later shots.

Enjoy!

SpiffyGrl Sun, 04/08/2012 - 15:05

It is very nice out today. I grabbed the horses (while they were up here) brushed, fly sprayed, and took pics.

Here are her pics from today.
Side shot.
[IMG]http://i360.photobucket.com/albums/oo49…]

Rear shot.
[IMG]http://i360.photobucket.com/albums/oo49…]

And Udder shot. There is a little change, her teats aren't as close together as they were on the pic from 3-31.
[IMG]http://i360.photobucket.com/albums/oo49…]

She was much happier after I sprayed her with fly spray and any ticks will be gone by next weekend, if not early this coming week. I also tried the Tick Twister, but there were just too many and my back was starting to hurt from being bent over, under her, to try and get them all. I got a few then decided to just let the fly spray kill the rest of them.

Oh and here's a pic of Drifter, just for fun. He's much happier with being fly sprayed too.

SpiffyGrl Mon, 04/09/2012 - 21:58

Should I move this to the foal brag section or is it okay here and just post the foaling and foal pics there?

SpiffyGrl Tue, 04/17/2012 - 14:29

Update pics. We have more of an udder now, still got time though.

And Udder.
[IMG]http://i360.photobucket.com/albums/oo49…]

If the weather keeps up like it has, rainy on the weekend, I'll just update at the beginning of the week. She's doing good and, as you can see in the udder pic, the ticks are gone from them. They still have a few here and there, but not near as many as they did. Hopefully I'll be gettin gmore fly spray soon, so I can spray more then just their bellies, and about mid-week next week she'll have one month left. There should be more udder development and she should start getting a V at about 3 or 2 weeks left.

SpiffyGrl Mon, 04/23/2012 - 14:49

So the horses were up by the house around noon. I grabbed then and ended up doing feet as well. Spiffy is almost at 1 month left and I'll be getting the barn in tip top shape for her to go in it real soon. So here's her update pics. Getting closer!

Just for fun, her she is in her fly bonnet. I messed up on the crown piece, so I'll be making another one. This time it will fit properly. Lol!

SpiffyGrl Thu, 05/03/2012 - 15:00

Just to let ya'll know, she's now in the barnlot and being locked in the barn at night. We have less then a month to see what color these 2 will have.
Here are the lastest pics of her. One is of her the day I put her in the barnlot where she looks more Chestnut then Sorrel. I know, same color (basically), but she seems to be 10 times darker then usual this year!

Pic of her looking darker then usual.
[IMG]http://i360.photobucket.com/albums/oo49…]

The rest were taken on Tuesday the 1st of May.
[IMG]http://i360.photobucket.com/albums/oo49…]

[IMG]http://i360.photobucket.com/albums/oo49…]

[IMG]http://i360.photobucket.com/albums/oo49…]

Does anyone have any idea why she's so much darker this year? No difference in light exposure or anything. Would the mild winter have had any effect on her coat color??

SpiffyGrl Mon, 05/14/2012 - 16:19

She had wax on both teats this morning, so approx. 2 more weeks till we see what color/patterns we get!

SpiffyGrl Fri, 05/25/2012 - 16:37

Took this pic this afternoon of her udder.

[IMG]http://i360.photobucket.com/albums/oo49…]

How long do 'you' think before she foals??

She got really ticked at me when I kicked her out of the barn to clean and rebed it. She's good now, but she worked herself up pretty good while outside. I had to rewrap her tail (this time we have a hunter green tail) and might have to rewrap it again tonight, or just add new wrap to it.

SpiffyGrl Thu, 05/31/2012 - 11:19

I have sad news to report. I'm hopeing those of you on other forums with me will not say anything on those other forums about this. I am devasted about it and blame only myself, I don't really need others telling me this. I figured ya'll could use this to see which of you were correct on you're color guess' though.

Spiffy foaled twin fillies yesterday afternoon. When I bred her last year the funds to have her twin checked were just not there and I wasn't all that worried since she had never had twins before. She passed the placenta and is fine. I moved her from the barn to the stud pen up by the house for closer observation, just in case.

I gather the smaller filly was still born and would have been a bay, similar to my gelding, but with higher stockings and no other white besides the small star on her forehead.

The larger filly I figured was alive for a while and only expired when Spiffy layed on her or rolled on her. Her legs were pushed into the ground, leaving and inmpression in the ground. I'm not quite sure what her color would've been as she only has what looks like coutershading dorsel stripe and high high stockings. Unlike her twin, she had more markings though. That I could see, she had the shoulder/neck white, a small spot on her left side, small marking on her left rump cheek, and a white & black tail.

Here are the pics that I took. Not pretty, but for the sake of color genetics.

I again ask that this not be mentioned on any other forums I share with you guys, as I'm not ready to tell the entire world.
Thank you.

Third Peppermint Thu, 05/31/2012 - 13:25

I'm sorry you lost your foals, maybe when you recover you can use your experience to talk to other people about the dangers of twins? It sounds absolutely heartbreaking.

As for my color guesses I would say buckskin tobiano and bay tobiano, not really sure if there is any dun in there since that's not really my forte.

greenlich Fri, 06/01/2012 - 07:57

So sorry to see this, we lost a foal a month agon, malpresentation, detached placenta and too early, nearly lost the mare. How is the mare? The bigger one may have been dead too, you don't know for sure if the mare rolled on it, the worst I've found is trying to think what you could have done differently, no matter what you can't change what has happened, very sad for mare, foals and owner, I know how you must be feeling.
