Grulla mare... smokey grulla? Smutty silver buckskin?

Holly is 7 this year, registered as grulla. Sire is a line backed silver buckskin, dam is a funky brown/grulla appy (I don't know what she's registered as. I have seen her in person, and I don't remember seeing any dun signs). Holly shows no sign of appy, and never has. These are all registered minis. She does have a very marked dorsal. I have not been able to see any barring, cobwebbing, or other dun signs. She does have a silver color to her coat when clipped. Her eyes are hazel. Her mane and tail are frosted. She does not have black anywhere, only dark brown (in summer, her winter coat is very creamy). Hopefully the link to pics works (first time using photobucket, and I'm not entirely sure how to link to it). http://s947.photobucket.com/albums/ad319/ImperialAcres/Holly/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; So, what color is Holly? I admit, I'm a bit stumped. My thoughts on her color are the title. If I need to get better (or clipped) pictures, let me know, and I can do that. I do have a half sister (same sire) who shows a strong dorsal as well (continues in mane and in tail, if she were darker, I'd say she's frosted as well), and is silver buckskin (no other dun signs). Her dam is a black. Is she dun as well? http://s947.photobucket.com/albums/ad319/ImperialAcres/Missy/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Thank you! :toast

Thank you! I've been wondering about Missy for years now (she's 7, and we bought her as a suckling). If she is dun, she got it from their sire, Diablo. She is pretty much an exact duplicate of him (except for that whole sex thing), right down to their height, color shades, and their stars. Her dam is a solid black (I have one photo of her, and did see her in person). The eye Missy lost was blue, tho (or so I was told. She lost it in a pasture accident at a week old, several weeks before I saw her for the first time).

I was pretty sure Holly was grulla, of some sort. She just didn't look right to be only grulla, tho. She's an incredibly sweet girl who will be starting her driving career this year, and hopefully her broodmare career next year (to foal in 2012). I plan on breeding her to a classic (true) red roan stallion. Whatever color the foal turns out, it should be a really nice baby.

I think the skin is too dark on all to be champagne, but I did wonder.

I think cream is involved because all three have VERY light amber eyes. Not impossible without cream, but given it's all three and I see subtle signs of it in other ways, I suspect it.

Champagne is not a possibility. Diablo comes from highly (commonly) bred, and extremely well known lines, and champagne does not appear anywhere in them (unless brought in from somewhere else). Silver and dun, however, appear somewhat commonly (cream and classic roan appear far more often, though).

The foal crop that Holly and Missy came from also produced some other really odd colored babies... one of whom I'm almost positive is a red dun. She was a peachy sort of color as a foal, and is still an odd chestnut color (saw her two weeks ago). I'll email her owner and see if she'll send me a pic of her to post. Another appeared to be a bay dun (not positive about him, I saw him last as a yearling). It was the year of the odd colored Diablo babies. They were all different colors and shades, and they all looked odd colorwise somehow.

Rabbitfizz, in case your interested in the sires bloodlines (you're the only one here I *know* breeds minis), his name is Little King's Echo Diablo, a son of Little King's Buck Echo (by Boones Little Buckeroo) and out of Little Kings Spring Pink Supreme (by Komokos Little King Supreme). These lines are primarily known for buckskins, and classic (true) roans, respectively.
Could be Brown Dun, I have not seen enough to be able to judge.

One of my Black Duns in winter coat, not the same "beige" caste to the coat at all.
But Brown does not explain the eyes.
yep exactly and that's what's bothering me - the sire looks champers in one shot - do you think anyone has tested him for it, I have seen Classic champagne as dark as this mare too which is why I am wondering especially after the shocker of that other non looking Champagne who is one !!

The sire has not been color tested, I can almost guarantee it. The lady who owns him won't spend the money for it. I haven't seen him since my girls were weanlings. I am very unlikely to get recent pictures as well... the lady is not terribly helpful for anyone who is not buying a horse from her.

I'll go out and check them (both Holly and Missy) to see if they have the champagne freckles. I don't think they do, but I'll look to make sure. I'll also take close ups of muzzles, eyes, and the skin under their tails.

I am, however, pretty sure they do not carry champagne. It might be a bit before I can get the pics back home, we're getting hay today!

2 years ago when I was looking for a horse I was pretty focused on buying a grulla and looked at all the grulla QH websites I could find. I've seen plenty with that tannish color before. I'll have to do a bit of searching but I'll see if I can find some.
