Friend wants to know...

She's a bay snowflake roan with hip spots. I wouldn't count her as a blanket phenotypically, but that's likely what she is genetically. Her white just seems to have been restricted somehow.

I would call her varnish base, not snowflake. I doubt that pattern is going to stay, even if it does look like snowflake at the moment (unless of course she has been this pattern all her life and is now 15??)
So she looks as if, under it all, she is a Bay base, varnish roan , with a small but distinct blanket.

They do, however I don't term them varnish until they LOOK varnish (essentially white with the bony points dark).

I, too, would call her a bay snowflake roan with spots on hips. When/if she roans out to reveal varnish marks, I'd call her a bay varnish roan. Varnish and snowflake are just variations of LP roaning, so the difference between the two is more a matter of opinion than genetics.
