foal born black

Can anyone help with regards to my new foal that was born black? His sire is a black Andalusian (EEaa) & his dam is an near leopard Appaloosa x Andalusian (her sire is dark bay EE Aa & her dam is true fewspot Appy) The foal has no Appy characteristics ie no stripey hooves, white sclera or mottled skin. I have never had a black foal that was actually born black, they are normally much lighter and then shed out to black. Can anyone tell me if this foal will stay black or if there is a chance he's inherited some of his mother's Appy genes and could colour out later? Thanks!

They can be born black and stay black. If you do a google "fresian foal" you will find quite a few examples. So, unfortunately, it's not an indicator of whether or not he will color out as he get older. Appy foals can be born non-characteristic and develop them as they get older so I guess only time will tell.

Pictures? We love pictures!

Welcome to the forum BTW!

Once the Lp test is released, you will be able to test him to see if he is characteristics only or does not have the appy gene at all.
