Colour puzzle - help needed!

Daylene Alford Sun, 08/14/2011 - 09:06

I think she is chestnut. The reasons are: 1)as a foal she doesn't appear to have the light eyelashes that are so common with silver foals 2) Her lower legs are light at the pastern which is an indication of chestnut 3) This color is fairly common in Welsh

The dorsal looks like countershading to me.

Do you have plans to test? What do her sire and dam look like? She is a German Riding Pony?

Sorry for all the questions...She is lovely!

She´s Welsh B

would like to test her, but don´t know what tests I should include.

Is it possible that the light mane comes from sabino? She´s definitely Sabino - including a small white spot at her belly.

Someone told me that a as yet undetected gene is suspected for this kind of light longhair - but he hadn´t updated informations - nothing more than a better kind of speculations.

I know that many heavy on Downland Chevalier-lines bred Welsh get this look. (Her mom is a Chevalier granddaughter) - here her pedigree: [url]http://whynot-ponys.de/pedigrees/pedigr…]

That is not just Flaxen, though, it has grey hairs interspersed and is pretty unique to Welsh- I think quite a few Morgans do that too??

Chestnut with flaxen and sooty. Quarter Horses and Paints also get the grey/silver hairs mixed into their mains without silver being present - I suspect it happens in a fair number of breeds...nice filly, btw. :toast
