Color Guess On Mare, and is the foal gonna be a black?

A friend of mine out in Southern California rescued these guys just hours after the foal was born. He's been in and out of the hospital, but doing fine now. Momma was not in great condition when he was born. Small ponies, appy spotted... Father isn't for sure known, but could be one of two stallions--an inky jet black QH with no white or a very dark blue roan who looks almost black. She said if she goes back out to this place, she'll try to get pictures. these first pics are from when the little guy (Oreo) was under a week old. The momma is named Cookie. My friend is around 6 ft tall or so, just to give you a clue on little guys size there..LOL and from today--1 1/2 months later [IMG]http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/j366/OhioPony/Peeros%20Rescues%20Co…] [IMG]http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/j366/OhioPony/Peeros%20Rescues%20Co…] [IMG]http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/j366/OhioPony/Peeros%20Rescues%20Co…] [IMG]http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/j366/OhioPony/Peeros%20Rescues%20Co…]

that was my guess that I told her, but I just don't know much on appy color/patterns. I'm just glad she has them now. Little guy had two separate visits to the hospital, but is thriving now.

The LP gene just wants you to think the mare is dark chestnut Admin. It's doing a Jedi mind trick with base color shift!

The splotchy copper tones in her coat are signs of the color shift from black pigment production to red pigment production. The legs often shift base color more evenly than the rest of the body. She probably looked much like her foal when she was born.

Great to see and know how well both are improving ^_^

That might not be her natural winter coat colour- poor nutrition can change a coat a lot, self black fancy rats that have been fed a poor diet and kept in filthy conditions (with ammonia) can go bright ginger.

I agree with Dogrose, color can change so much with poor or good diet, minerals too. #:-S So glad they got rescued.
