Chimera or foal shading?

My friend asked me to post this as this long awaited foal was born saturday night and instead of being the hoped for spotted, is instead STRIPED!! lol They look too pronounced to be just foal shading but maybe Im wrong...please tell me what you think? Really Acc? Wow, I have seen countershading on my black foals but not this pronounced (and owner says its a lot darker in the flesh plus there are stripes all the way down each leg!) Thanks for your diagnosis! :flower think she will be relieved!

Yep, countershading, it will fade as time passes.
If you want a striped foal look at the "Interesting Patterns" Forum under "Brindle Mini"...which this foal is not, BTW!!

GullaBlue or DunCentralStation (or someone of the likes) website has a photo of a known black only foal who has stripes even more prominent than this foal. I've been looking for the pic but I can't find it. :BH

Hi Lipigirl,

I posted a bit on the old forum :-) Nancy Castle of DCS steered me in this direction when the old site went down. You can see all my horses on my website. Lots and lots of pictures! I don't want to highjack this thread so here is just one. Positively Charmed, a smoky black silver 2 year old Morgan filly :-)

Doesn't look like any Chestnut I've ever seen, I have to say.
It looks like a Smoky Black.....well, then it is a toss up between Silver and Dun, visually, but since you know what she is.....

Gorgeous. You can tell there is something going on by the odd shading in the coat and the "diluted but not quite diluted" look about the eyes and muzzle.

Hi everyone ,i am pablo ,i am new on here .I am the owner of the foal that my friend posted for me .The foals dam is black and has 2 black parents .Her sire is a black based appy who has 2 appy parents .I am delighted to be told she is a regular black filly . I was expecting to see spots but didnt expect stripes ,they are not good pictures as she has bars down her 4 legs ,definate vertical stripes down her hind quarters .She has a blue sheen to her coat but the stripes are black .Are these the primitive markings you talk about and why are they so prominent on a black horse ?Sorry to be a pest but i am only learning about colour !! :)

You mean what a smokey black MINI would look like? I certainly haven't seen many (if any) smokey black full sizes look like that, silver not withstanding.

This is sounding more and more like what Ebony's gone thru' coat-wise...might want to look into dun testing for this foal?
Did you find out that Ebony is dun?
That would require we sent in samples for testing. :laugh1 It's on the "round-tuit" list. Right now we're concentrating on getting mortgage free within the next few months or so.
Determining dun on a leopard is virtually impossible.
What ACC said...to figure out dorsal stripe, leg barring, etc., you'd have to start trying to line up spots.

A friend of mine has a foal that shows a dorsal on her spots...two or three of them line up perfectly and you can see the line going through them...the base colour is Red so it shows quite well!!
When I asked where that had come form she looked at me blankly and said "What??"
I said "The foal is Dun, where did the Dun come from??"
She looked at the foal and then at me as if I had gone mad and said "The foal is Leopard" (well it's near Leopard)
:BH :BH :BH
Mind you when I asked what colour her Fewspot was she told me he was white...um...yes...I can see that, what is his base colour??
No idea.
ARGH.
Nice little stallion though, I have used him on two mares.
I'll get pictures next time I am over there.

Let me put it this way...if there's a possibility that he could be dun, and if you have the money to do so, why not?
