Blue Roan? Red Roan?

Any ideas what his color is? He's my mini stallion and he is 9 years old. He has barring on his front legs. Judy

Dunno...I agree with Maigray, legs don't look very black.

What is the sire & dam??

I have no clue who or what color his parents are. I wish I did. I've never seen a coloration like this before. Here is a picture of him in his winter woolies the month I got him in Mar. 08. Judy

Despite the fact that Stormy is having a bad hair day it shows him in his winter woolies of 09. On a funny note, he's the best watchdog this side of the Mississippi. Nothing gets past him. He's better then my dogs!!!
But wouldn't his mane and tail be dark? Judy
I don't think necessarily.
I've seen some where the mane looks "silver/gray."

Like this mare...

And the owner claims she's a blue roan, but I don't believe that!! lol

Leopard complex. It's the gene that causes appaloosa characteristics (but not necessarily spots).

She is similar in color to Stormy. He has that reddish hue in his mane and fetlocks. I thought it was stained but it never would come out no matter how much I washed him. Judy

Hey ACC...can rabicano cause that??
I've seen where on some roan/rabicanos the tail can get lightened a lot.
Could it just be rabicano or maybe rabicano + ???

accphotography Sun, 07/05/2009 - 00:23

The roan alone can do that to the mane and tail, it's just the red pasterns that make me think silver... or cream... or LP.

Addorra2007 Sun, 07/05/2009 - 00:27

The woman who gave him to me described his color as just blue roan. I always thought roans had those scar marks on them. Not sure if that is what they are called. Stormy doesn't have any of those on him at all. I think my lack of knowledge in this area is showing. Lol Judy

accphotography Sun, 07/05/2009 - 00:28

I just call them roan marks or rub marks. I think Sponenberg calls them corn marks. :| Not all roans get them.

I've jumped staright to the end to avoid the queue!!
I would lay money he is going Grey....Dun going Grey.

critterkeeper Sun, 07/05/2009 - 10:08

Wouldn't he already be grey RF? He is 9 yrs old.

I agree with RF - black silver roan (and I'd bet classic AND rabicano roan). I am the one who finds chestnuts everywhere, but the chocolatey hew combined with the light silvery mane/tail leads me to think black with silver (but he is a mini so who knows).

When I first got him and he shed his winter coat, he had darker shading on his shoulders and hips. Just a couple shades darker then the rest of his body. In the picture I posted is what he has been ever since. He did develop a dark circle behind his shoulder on his left side. Even in his winter hair you can still see it. When I first got him he didn't have this dark circle.

All of your comments on Stormy's coloring is fascinating. I look forward to all of them.
Judy

P.S. I just found the pictures that were sent to me by the previous owner before I got him. He was a different shade of color before I got him. Hope this helps.

I just google searched for a black silver roan and my guy looks just like her in color. Stormy has a color label, YAY. Lol Judy

Thank you all for your assessments on Stormy's color, it's all been fascinating to me. Judy

So, the leg barring doesn't mean dun in this case? Does he have any other dun markings such as cobwebbing on his face? Any sign of a dorsal stripe? I am just wondering if he could be a silver grullo roan.

slaneyrose Tue, 07/21/2009 - 19:15

Ive been reading this thread with fascination too lol, isnt it funny how obviously silver black SOMETHING he is from the earlier pics.....but I also am baffled by the leg barring, thats not a roan thing as well as a dun is it?? :?:

accphotography Tue, 07/21/2009 - 20:18

IME roan does tend to cause false dorsals, not sure why it couldn't cause false leg bars. What gets me is the roaning is within the lines of the barring, not the other way around. That says roan is causing it to me.

Oh and FWIW those don't look like dun leg bars to me anyway. They're shaped wrong and in the wrong place.
