black? smoky black? grulla?

Hoping to figure out what color this little guy is...His dam is a bay tobiano, heterozygous for black, agouti, and tobiano. His sire is a silver buckskin leopard appaloosa(I think-will explain), heterozygous for agouti and silver, not sure on zygosity of black. Now the sire has dun is his pedigree-sire's grandsire was definately dun, dam is registered as dun but I cant tell in pictures if she is, plus she is appaloosa so hard to tell. My stallion is leopard, with so much white I couldnt tell if he has a dorsal stripe if he is dun. I know for certain his sire is silver buckskin. So now Im not certain if my leopard stallion is silver buckskin, silver dun, or silver dunskin. I would like opinions on this colt, is he black, smoky black, grulla, even smoky grulla? This stallion also had another foal this year that looked dun by a non dun mare, that one looked brown dun. Both foals do look dun especially the bay/brown foal as you can see more primitive markings and the black foal also has a face mask and going by the creamy colour in his ears and through his coat I am going to say he is a smokey black dun.

Have you any pics of the dad - he sounds lovely.

I think the first foal is probably black. It's not uncommon for black foals to be born with a strong dorsal and even primitive markings. Grullo foals are generally a buff color instead of the slate gray I'm seeing here. The second foal could be dun. I hesitate to say dun for sure however because the photos are taken indoors and the foal coat is very dark for a dun foal. I would really love to see some photos of both foals with natural light. If the sire is a lepard pics probably won't help with the color determination but I'm sure I'm not the only one who would love to see pics just to ooggle the pretty horses.

I agree, first foal probably Black- it is as difficult, btw, to tell if a Black Dun has Cream by looking as it is to tell a Smoky Black, ie, you can't, not by looking
The second foal looks Dun to me, but, even then, foal coats can be very very misleading.
Just on looks alone I would say Black the first and Bay/Brown Dun the second, but I recommend testing!

Yeh I think the first one looks black (or possibly smokey black), not sure on the second. Does have some very obvious primative markings but colour doesn't seem quite right. The dam wasn't grey was she?
