BLACK Grulla

So.... is this documented? Somebody on FSH has said a few times that her horse is grulla (don't think he's had the dun zygosity test and I'm not sure about parentage), but to me he just looks black. She maintains he has a definite stripe down his back and markings on his withers/ears but I don't understand her reasoning that he's grulla. I like her but I think she's wrong. http://fhotd64476.yuku.com/topic/36277/master/1/?page=2" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

If the link led me to the horse you're talking of, it definitely looks grullo to me. There are some really neat colors on that thread. Do you think we could ask if we can use them in the Galleries?

I'm 98% sure you're seeing the wrong horse Mai. I had to go looking for the one she mentioned.

This is the one:

I have definitely seen some VERY dark grullos, VERY dark. However I've never seen one that dark. Not even close. I have seen blacks with obvious countershading though. Given what she says about that horse, I think it's her wishful thinking just because she can see countershading.

If you don't have a yuku account I'd be happy to PM anybody you'd like to ask. I doubt any of them would be opposed.

looks plain black to me, both my blacks have dorsals, especially when they fade in summer.
dun dilutes the body, but I have never seen a grulla that dark before.

I have a very, very dark Grulla so I am on the fence on this one, also Mia was really dark, and proven by breeding to be Dun (Bertie is not proven as he is a gelding)
So I am not sure, I would have to ask, "Why does she think he is Dun?"
I think Bertie is because he was visually Grulla when a baby, and has got darker with age.
I know Mia was because I had not the faintest idea what her colour was as a foal, she was "weird" but she threw a Dun foal to anon Dun stallion and her sire was Rabbit!!!

I personally belive this one is not dun, but like Rabbit pointed out, you can't always tell by color alone. Tell her about the dun test and maybe she can get "proof" - for bragging rights if nothing else. :rofl
