Totilas Colt--lot o' white

http://www.pferdezucht-brunken.de/index.php?id=39 that's the momma behind him...but look at all that white on his legs! Left front goes up over the knee too. Cute blaze face. Totilas doesn't have much white at all either, but is it coming from his side? I seem to remember his sire had a very "splash" looking facial marking (white splotch on front of muzzle)

Both Totilas and his sire have minimal splash face markings so I bet that combined with mom's more expressed white allowed for less suppression of the splash.

Id also bet it has to do with the fact that the baby is chestnut. Both mom and dad have decent amounts of white for black bases. The baby just got a louder expression because hes chestnut.

Can someone explain to me this theory that different base colors express more white? Which patterns does this apply to??

RiddleMeThis Mon, 04/04/2011 - 21:08

It applies to all patterns, and chestnut expresses more than black and bay, bay expresses more than black, and black expresses the least. Theres a paper or two on it in the stickied research paper thread.

I have two full sisters, one black & one chestnut.
The black one has way more white on her than the chestnut.

Person on another forum had twins. One loudy and blingy, one completely solid. It's the genes that matter not what actually shows. The black probably got a different set with different white patterns and different white modifiers than the chestnut did.

Hello,
I am the breeder of this coloured Totilas Colt.
Have sold the mare infoal to Family Brunken last Summer.

Mares Mother is chestnut by Rubinstein. Her Father "Sir Donnerhall" is by Donnerhall, he was also a Chestnut. And Gribaldi made chestnuts as well. So we must have expected a chestnut but we didn´t. It was a big surprise indeed LOL. Her first Foal by "Christ" was a black Colt.
You can find more Pictures of her here : [url=http://germanpremiumfoals.com/2.html]Su…]

Welcome and thank you for the additional information and photo link. Based on her pedigree and progeny, she is Ee A[sup]t[/sup]a so you can get black, brown or chestnut from her depending on the sire.

Paint breeder's have know for years that white expresses more on a red based horse than on a black, they call breaking color. Must be because the red and the white expression is linked, is that correct RiddleMe This?
