Question on Buckskins

I was just wondering how genetics affect the colouring of Buckskins. My own colt is more of that creamy buckskin and you see buckeroo is more golden. What makes the changes in the coat colouring. Is it down to the colour of the mare for eg. I know that its probably true for all colours as there are so many types of bays chestnuts palominos etc. I was just wondering though for eg. if I bred my colt (avatar) to a dark bay mare could I have a better chance of getting a golden buckskin? Maybe an odd question but I am curious about how it works and does it come down to the depth of colour in for eg the mare that might help produce the more golden or paler buckskin. Hope that makes sense :?

No one knows, though the effect of sooty often appears heritable. The depth of an individual horse's color is probably related to the amount and organization of melanin in the hair shaft.

Well, I have seen those "chamois" coloured Buckskins from Buckeroo, he really isn't that deep a colour, you know....what colour is your boy unclipped??
But I do know that Buckskins aren't only governed by sooty, I have seen a lot of them that are just that rich golden colour (sorry, folks, I am talking Minis here, I know quite a few of you have varying, non sooty Buckskins in BHs :sign ) and then there are quite a few that are dappled as well, without evident sooty.
Personally, I think it is just down to colour...whatever the size, some Chestnuts are deep rich red, some are almost Palomino in colour.
Seems the same in Buckskins, although they are probably nearer to Palominos in analogy, as they also have Cream.
I know Dun pales out Palominos, often, and that probably is not happening in Buckskins, but there must be loads of very pale Palominos that are known not to have Dun??

Also, the shade of buckskin can vary a lot based on diet. For a richer color, add some fats to the diet and make sure mineral/vitamin needs are met.

Ok that makes some sense to my poor old brain. Banner is basically the same colour clipped as unclipped. He is what I call a creamy white in his winter woolies - will try and get a current pic. And when clipped there is almost a grey hue off his coat. I guess it doesnt make a difference but he carries 1 copy of Agouti, Black and Red.

So then with Palominos and Dun then Slaney who I "think" is dun (dorsal only visable in summer coat) although I have yet to see a dun foal from her is a very pale Palomino and I also believe her to have sooty as her legs in her summer coat always have what I call a dirty look (I know I have very technical jargon  ). So might still lean towards a dunalino although she still has to prove it to me  :D

As for vitamins etc they are on a very good diet and if I think they are missing somthing then they get it.
When out the field they have a mineral lick - I use the horselyx as they love it and I find it really good.

The parents color only has a small amount to do with it IMO based solely on the fact that I've hordes of full siblings who each had a different coat color. The most obvious variations do seem to stem from brown, but brown not included, it's all just expression variance IMO.

Full siblings (one regular buckskin and one smokey brown):

There is a full sibling WAY darker than that ^ guy, but I can't find an old enough photo of her (her owner is bad about taking pics LOL).

It would be nice if they could figure it out...from a black-bay over a clear red bay, I've an extremely sooty bay. From a black-bay over a black-bay, I have a black-bodied, brown legged bay...LOL

Pic attached of my buckskin colt taken when he was about 4 days old, I also had his full bro who was born almost identical in colour but he shed out to be a really dark burnt buckskin. When my new camera (yay!) arrives tomorrow, I will upload another pic of him as he is today at 9 weeks old. He is now shedding out to be a lovely dark golden buckskin, alot lighter than his full bro :)

Hey What The Wed, 03/24/2010 - 22:20

Here is a pic taken today at 9 weeks old plus I was able to find a pic of his big bro taken when he was about 8 mths old :)

Nice looking boy and he has shed out a lot darker then his foal coat - do you think he might get as dark as his brother?

accphotography Thu, 03/25/2010 - 18:34

Brother is brown based. I'm not sure if baby is or not (in the foal coat they're very similar). That first shed is always the darkest so he may well lighten back up (that is if neither are gray).

In first pic he looks like a sooty buckskin! very nice, He also looks to be goin grey? I personally like the bucky goin grey colour, very unique and lovley :)

Hey What The Fri, 03/26/2010 - 03:18

The older colt didn't go grey - he stayed a really dark buckskin. I really like his type so I'm hoping little bro will be as chunky as he is.

Dak - I'm not convinced he is going grey, I s'pose I could have him tested, but there's probably not much point cos he is for sale *hint hint* lol. I just thought it was interesting to see the difference in 2 full siblings. :)

dakotakdq Fri, 03/26/2010 - 21:20

I love seeing sibllings and how simliar or different they can be :)

Yeh no point testing if hes for sale :( bugger you have to sell him, I have to sell my bucky colt too :(
