Question about Agouti Test Status

Re: Question about Agouti Test Status

No, it appears bay is dominate over brown so an A At horse would show as a bay. Testing would let you know if your horse is Aa or AAt
Or to take it a step further, AA (as not all "browns" test as At, but as A instead).
I'd love to see a brown that tested negative for brown. That would defeat the purpose of the test.
'At' is seal brown.

ACC, I was referring to those "browns" that were not truly brown but "appeared" to be - like the faded blacks, some other expressions on black based horses that are not apparent as such - like a dark bay with heavy sooty factor....see where I'm going with that. The OP said the horse in question was "obviously brown" (as in appearance) and not tested as brown, and we know how far "off color" some appear :rofl .
Re: Question about Agouti Test Status
Ok, I get that she will test A_. But unless I have her tested for Agouti at somewhere other than Pet DNA sevices, she should come back a...? Or do brown horses sometimes come back A (NOT at Pet DNA services, where there is a test for At). Just wondering if it's wotrh testing anywhere other tha Pet DNA services...or if she would come back Aa anyways...no possibility of an AA from a brown sire.
Re: Question about Agouti Test Status
Ok, we can make some assumptions here. If the sire is truly brown, he is either AtAt or Ata. Since the foal is clearly not a brown base she's obviously A_ so she got the regular bay from her dam. The only question left is did the sire pass a brown copy to her. Yes, you could use PetDNA to determine this, but it's not necessary. If you test her for just agouti at any lab and she is Aa you know she's carrying bay only. If she's AA you know she's carrying both bay and brown. (Brown will always test as an A, never as an a.)

Thank you. That was the question. Just trying to figure out if testing her for Agouti would tell me her brown status. and now I know it will.
