Minimal tobiano

No pics at the moment but I have a black dun mare, her sire is a silver dapple tobiano, she has 2 separate sections of mane about the size of a finger nail that are white, could this mean she is a minimal tobiano?

No just the 2 spots in her mane, I was reading a thread on another forum talking about minimals tobiano & got me thinking about her odd spots, was about a lady that had a solid mare with the same style of spot in her tail, she produced a tobiano to a solid stallion. She later got her tested as being a tobiano.

Until I read that thread I thought nothing of her white spots?

Is every white spot on a horse accountable by a gene? If that makes sense lol.

Depends on the type of white spot. Birdcatcher spots are not known to be genetic, but most other white is thought to be due to some allele.

Since you know her to have a Tobiano sire I would say yes, it would be worth having her tested.
Just a question...why do you say she is Black Dun?

bonjovifan Mon, 07/26/2010 - 18:17

The dun comes from her dam line, both dam & sire are chestnut duns, there was talk around that her dam carried a cream gene from her pally dam but who knows.

She is in foal to an overo stallion due in a few weeks so if it comes out a tovero we know she is a tobiano lol. We have 2 foals due by the overo stallion, if either are good enough to stay colts or are fillies we will be testing of course so will be sending her sample away also to be tested for tobiano as well as cream just incase the talk around might be correct.

This photo may show her dun markings better but she is sun bleached, it was a very big photo & have shrunk it so not sure how clear it will come up.

I do indeed see the dun in that photo. How ODD minis are in their expression of dun. Seeing one that dark (borderline "hidden") is NOT common in big horses (I've seen maybe 3 total ever and two of them are not proven :rofl).

Did you say black dun out of two red dun parents? or are both the dams parents red dun?

accphotography Wed, 07/28/2010 - 09:01

I think she was trying to say both of her dam's parents were red duns. That's what I got out of it anyway.

Ahhhh, makes more sense, sorry haven't eaten for 3 days so feeling a bit confused.

Three days!? What happened? Going 12 hours is bad enough for me...

bonjovifan Thu, 07/29/2010 - 23:07

lol yes should have explained a bit better.

Gee 3 days not eating, hope everything is ok!

Okay, now I have a question (just curiosity here, but you know how I am ymwhisle )...if a tobi is that minimally marked, what are the odds (percentages) that it will carry frame (seeing as frame is known to inhibit leg white)?

Maybe, but the shetlands can be very minimal with some solid legs and they don't have frame
