LP in Gypsy Vanners?

A friend sent me a link to some gorgeous Gypsy Vanners and I found this guy interesting: http://www.gypsymvp.com/horses/ghost-rider/ghost-rider.html as he appears to be leopard appy in color. I was curious how prevalent LP was in Gypsy horses (or is it something other than LP?), as I had never seen a leopard or even near leopard in the other sites I have visited. I know that the roots of the breed are maybe not as clearly defined or historically rigid as many other breeds, so am guessing that they can come in pretty much any color, but just had not seen appy type spots before in the breed.

Well no doubt it's LP as he's passed it on to his bay
foal, Lone Star. I really like his full brother...more contrast. :love

Oh yea, Gypsys definitely come in appy colors. :)

My friend Jennifer (http://www.jennerroseranch.webs.com/) breeds Haflingers and has a foal by this appy Gypsy stud. She is also breed leasing him and will be standing at her place soon.

His name is CS Hermits Silver Shadow by Hermits Ghost Palouse. The horse in the OP's sire is this horse's grandsire. The stud is a registered Few Spot. I did inquire if he tested grey and evidently he is not grey according to his owners website.

The stud:

And finally, the Gypsy/Haflinger colt she bred from him:

there was a stallion named Indigo http://www.djwwgypsyhorses.com/indigo.h… that I remember seeing as a kid, got me hooked on gypsy vanners. His sire: http://translate.googleusercontent.com/…

looong link. But everything I've seen about LP vanners say that it was a popular colour a while back (30+ yrs) and it died out in favor of the "pinto" look. Idk where it came from, the only things I can think of that carry LP (not in America) are Norikers lol http://windingcreekstables.net/?p=577 .

^ The Desert Jewel Gypsy people have numerous appy colored Gypsys on their website. In their current stallion line-up and on their sold stallions page.

Speaking of the Desert Jewel people, I really want to see some updated photos of this girl!

The Smokey Black with Pearl that everyone was talking about a while ago.

[Edit]: AHHA! Found some! I think that is her in the background of these foal photos. http://www.djwwgypsyhorses.com/Jackson…

They also have another Smokey Black + Pearl there.

It could have come from Knabs, it could have come from apps, it could have come from anywhere, really. "Gypsy vanners" did not become a breed as such until relatively recently.

They are not sort after in the UK by the gypsies. Spotted LP vanners are not classed as what most travellers would want, the traditional pinto and solids are what they like. Someone has recently introduced the colour hence these ones cropping up. Bere in mind that most vanners do not have a pedigree as such and should be treated like a Mustang - they are a mixed breed to creat a type. In the UK every horse that is not running wild on the moors,is required to have a microchip and passport, however a lot of the travellers/gypsies do not bother with this and they do not even keep records of most horse's breeding other than by word of mouth. So, yes there can be LP vanners but they are new to the 'breed'(i personally like LP in them from what I have seen today). But as i have already said, these horses in the UK are mostly Mutts so almost any colour could be accepted on that basis. The current trend is to breed smaller and smaller, so that the top size is 12.2hh with masses of bone and feather. My new boy is old type traditional Vanner and not one of these new ones with a Section D head. I have learned an awful lot from the man i bought my boy from,he rescues ponies off the gypsies all the time and he has Romany blood, the new travellers round here have very little ethics when it comes to horses I am afraid.

Appaloosa in the UK often refers to British Spotted horses (a spotted sport horse type/'breed') not American appaloosas although British Spotted breeders import appaloosas from the USA. There have probably always been spotted horses here in the general gene pool though.

Hermits stud btw, is famous over here for spotted ponies, mainly miniature ones - seems they have branched out and I do like what I see.

Hey cool, I took the picture above of the Hermits spotted stallion at the fair, it does get around LOL! There are some really minimal spotted ones in the gypsies. There has been a few surprise spots born from UK imported horses that just looked tobiano, or actually the usual tobiano/splash/sabino mix.

I do quite like the smokey black pearls, I'm not a fan of double dilutes as a rule, but there seems to be touch more colour in the pearls. I like Mystery's colour these days. Was it here someone posted pictures of a black pearl? So a black with two pearl genes? A spanish horse? Was darker again, quite a cool colour, or have a remembered wrong?!
