Odd white splattery marks on right hip. No other white on the horse.

Not an old wives' tale at all. Simply Striking had that happen to him from a fungal infection.
Could it be wounds? Do wounds
Could it be wounds? Do wounds grow back with white hair on horses sometimes? I don't know if that's an old wives' tale or not.
