False Dorsal Stripe

Just wondering how long it takes before a foal loses it's false dorsal stripe (presuming it has one lol). I have a young colt here born 12 Nov 2010 with a really prominent stripe down his back and even now it is still very distinctive. Mum is definitely NOT dun and I don't think dad is either but in saying that he is perlino gone grey so kinda hard to tell but I think it highly unlikely considering his breeding is predominantly TB and Arab. Are there any documented cases where it stays for the horses lifetime regardless of not having a dun parent. Basically I guess what I want to know is can it spontaneously mutate??

HWT - there are thousands of cases where a dorsal strip stays with a horse for life, even without a known "dun" parent. There are even cases where a tested "non-dun" was registered dun due to that stripe It is the nature of the stripe combined with other primative dun factors that indicate true dun.....The basic rule is: no dun parent, can't be dun...but in your case of a perlino gone grey, you can't rule dad out without a test. This site can give you a lot of info and is my "go to" site with dun questions....they also have an excellent gallery of psudo-duns you should check out.

Thanks CK, I will definitely be having a look. It just surprises me with his stripe being so dark and it really doesn't seem to be disappearing. I was trying to have a look yesterday for leg barring etc but he's a bucky and his black stockings seem to go up his legs an awfully long way lol so I wasn't sure if what I was looking at was the shadowy top of his stockings or *maybe* leg barring. I'm leaning towards him not being dun but it does have me curious.

Ok, have had a good look on the dun site and and am positive he is NOT dun. Bummer. That would've been nice lol. Maybe I need to invest in one :)
