Cool Colored Andalusians

I'm a sucker for Spanish horses, especially weird colors. Here are a few neat ones I found: http://www.yeguadabejar.com/sementales.php?idioma=en" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Derroche is pearl, right? http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_X_b2maK96sM/TQAVFdvabCI/AAAAAAAADq4/jLKa-EwQe…" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Ambicioso VIII - bay stallion by Limeno III (splash maybe?) http://www.horseclicks.com/horses/4h902s/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - another pearl? http://www.pre-elite-int.com/home/components/com_hotproperty/img/thb/11…" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - cool dark chestnut http://www.yeguadasusaeta.com/ingles/andalusianhorses-purespanishhorses…" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - scroll down to Gen, his greying actually kind of reminds me of the Comicos http://starandalusiansprestud.com/images/dante%20standing.jpeg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - Dante - cool sooty buckskin http://www.yeguada-teresagarzon.com/image/semental/album/receloso_6.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - Receloso, what happened to the rest of his blaze? http://www.yeguadapre.es/cms/images/sigplus/potrosdestetados/DSC_4292.j…" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - just liked this picture! http://www.spanishhorsespecialists.com/index.php?id=329&L=0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - Uhm, I want to believe?

I love that weanling/yearling pic with all their different coloured rumps!

I've been watching the Merlin series this week, I'd assume most of their horses are spanish bred? They just all have gorgeous horses, and I love watching it!!

You know I'm also really liking the black pearls in the spanish bred! I'm not sure I like pearl that much, but gosh the spanish horses make me love it, they are gorgeous!!!

I don't remember the reasoning, but it's pretty much a requirement. I know when they show and/or inspected they are not allowed to have their hair until a certain age.

but why is it only done on the youngsters? My vet runs all his out together and only the yearlings and under get it (from what it looks like..maybe some 2 year olds too).

Perhaps it shows off the hind end and back legs better? For inspection and that sort of thing. Especially during the growing ages and deciding who is stallion quality and who is not, etc.

I say that because we show cows and often shave the tail clean to not only make it neater looking but it seems to make the hind end look more impressive from the back.

eta:
The Andalusian typically has a thick, long mane and tail of a fine silky texture, in some cases almost as find as human hair.

Traditionally in Spain, manes and tails are shaved on the foals and adult mares. All yearlings have completely shaved tails. Colts are shaved until age two, then allowed to grow. The process is thought to encourage thicker growth. Traditionally the fillies and mares manes and tails are kept roached and clipped. Trimming of the forelock is optional. Age groups are distinguished according to length of tail thus easy making for easy identification out in the pasture.

There is a precise measurement for shaving the tails: for 2 year old fillies, the tail is shaved 15 cm from the top and cut off 10 cm below the end of the root. For fillies 3 yrs old and over, the tail is shaved 25 cm from the top and the end of the tail meets the middle of the hock.

Inside ear hairs are left natural for protection against the elements and muzzle hairs are left unshaven for they also serve a purpose as antennae.

At Mythos, mares and foals are kept in a natural state in an effort to provide greater protection from the harsher winters at 7,000 ft altitude and in summer from flying pests. No to mention the enjoyment of a breathtaking mane and tail at a full gallop dancing on the wind!
I see this a lot...what is the reasoning behind the shaved down tails? My vet even does it to his andy youngsters (he's from Spain and imports horses from his home farm)
Shows off the hip/rump better and is easier than braiding a tail. A lot of show folk do it here.

I'm not a fan of it. Can't braid a tail to save my life, but there's just something really gorgeous about a well-braided tail.

I think the andy people maybe take it too extremes with the whole tail shaved off though!! :D Showies here just do 5 or 5 inches of dock

As nice as that tobiano is, I want to know what both his parents where, not just one. When people do that, i smell scam, specially at that price.

I'm getting the same feeling. It's like the 'purebred' tobiano arabian who was found to not be so purebred. ymwhisle
