Color Questions-New Pony

This is my new 13hh pony, Indy. The seller says she is a pally pinto expressing the red gene but that she carries dilute because of her white mane and tail. Both her parents were b/w pintos. How is this possible? I am not doubting the seller, just don't know about this stuff. Wondering what I should breed her to in the future to get some nice light colored foals. Also what exact pattern is she? And feel free to critique, I love her anyway :) [img]http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g383/crittercountry/Jens%20Pics%20S…] [img]http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g383/crittercountry/Jens%20Pics%20S…] [img]http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g383/crittercountry/Jens%20Pics%20S…]

She's a chestnut and white, no pally there :) Chestnuts can have flaxen manes. So you'd have to breed her to a buckskin/pally etc.. if you wanted a cream dilute. Oh her main white pattern is tobiano too

Not only that, but white patterned horses tend to have white mane where the white on the body reaches. She looks a bit of a winter shaggy-muffin in these photos, but I can see at least some white on her neck. Pattern-wise, I'm seeing splash and tobiano, at the very least, possibly/probably sabino too.

Yeh I agree, although splash and sabino seem to be everywhere these days!!

I agree with everyone. Chestnut and white. While her sire and dam could have been carriers of the cream gene (it is not expressed on black horses), it would definitely express on a red horse. Her mane and tail are white from her tobiano, not from any 'hidden' cream gene.

Thanks everyone for the quick responses! I was thinking sorrel and white too, with flaxen mane and tail.
I knew she had to have some other pattern as well as tobi too because her markings were so jagged. So the verdict on that is...sabino + tobiano + splash. Interesting for sure.
Ah well, no matter what color she is I love her.
What do you think overall? Any breed guesses or what she might be suitable for based on her conformation? I know she isn't standing great in the pics, but whatever you can think of would help me decide which direction to point her in training.
You do have to admit..she is adorable :D

I agree that the white mane and tail are caused by the tobiano white areas. She does not have a flaxen mane and tail.

I also see tobiano and sabino.

All photos are of her left side.

I agree with chestnut tobiano/sabino, but I would still test for frame since you are considering breeding her in the future.

I also agree on flaxen where it's not white. I think the darker lower part of tail is due to dirt/staining (looks like my haffy's..haha). There is a section on the neck in the first pic that shows red going up to the mane, and little red guard hairs there, so the mane there would be dark I would think if it were not flaxen.

Seeing as we all pretty much agree on color, now to the next question: possible breed and discipline potential. She is a good sized pony, but, imho, a bit too course for a Welsh, too heavy for a Quarter Pony, too large for a Shetland and too highly colored for a Haffy, so she has to be a crossbreed (or several crosses :HB ). A shot in the dark? Sec. C or D Welsh/Haffy/Quarter Pony combo with a possible Shetland thrown in for good measure....of course, I could be entirely wrong :bounce She looks to be a loving and gentle pony, so just love her for who she is, breeding doesn't really matter when it comes to a good pony.

As for discipline, she could probably be a descent all-around mount, but I'd go with driving....she looks like she'd make a solid and calm cart pony...(I'd love to have one of those myself).

Thanks I was already starting to question LWO if she does have frame somewhere.
When I do breed her I would be striving for a loudly marked buckskin or pally pinto. So should I breed to pally, cremello, perlino, ??

accphotography Thu, 02/10/2011 - 18:47

If you breed her to a cremello you are guaranteed a palomino. If you breed her to a perlino, depending on his and her genetics, you could get any of the three dilutes. Depends which you want to most and if you can find a stallion good enough in the color you're thinking.

Oh the stud has to worth his salt for sure, not just pretty.
Driving?? Heck,I bought her to ride her,LOL..I could have driven my shetland..hmmphhh...lol.
I was thinking of hunter pony or maybe even dressage :)

Hey, if she enjoys it, do it!
Hard to say without seeing her movement, but just let her try things out and I'm sure you'll find her niche
