Due to decreasing use over the years, I have decided to disable the forum functionality of the site.

Forums will still be available to view but new posts are no longer allowed.

This forum is only visible to Admins and Moderators

It is for discussing topics that don't need to be seen by everyone....

or in other words, how to control unruly members! LOL

Speaking of which, since it's been so long since I did sign up for the forum, what's in place to prevent spammers again? Also, might it be worth considering having people on moderation/have limited access to the site until they've made a couple of posts? I'm thinking that some of the general/personal posts don't need to be available to the general public...

There is a captcha that they have to pass to sign up. If spammers do become a problem we may have to enable admin approval like Sarah did. There are some other steps that can be taken I skimmed through them on the phpbb board site. If need be I'll implement some of them.

LOL if people don't want everyone know they shouldn't be posting it on the Internet. I (or one of the other admins) can limit access to guests but I'm not sure about having a probation period. I'll have to look it up and see what I can find.

oooh, supersecret forum goodness! :ugeek:

meh, I post some pretty personal stuff sometimes but I am fully aware that the internets are real and everyone can read them. I try to make sure I don't disclose enough information that people can identify the people I'm ranting about.

the probation period is basically to a) help keep spammers at bay (being restricted to one or two sections before posting X number of times, like twice) as it keeps them from getting info elsewhere in the forum, and b) helps prevent cyberstalking. Having been the recipient of cyberstalking, I take privacy rather serious. One of the reasons I don't post pictures much is because I've had problems with people stealing photos, photoshopping them and then making outrageous claims, to the tune of having to hire lawyers and threaten slander/libel.
