Dominant White

Today I went to a horse show, and I brought my camera because I need pictures for a website I'm making in computers on equine genetics. I saw this gorgeous horse, and thought it was a sabino. I followed the guy leading the horse back to the barn, feeling like a stalker. When he finally stopped I asked him if I could take some pics of his horse because it was really pretty. He said "sure!" somewhat surprised, like his horse was nothing special. I asked if it was sabino, and he said "nope, just a 3yo appaloosa!" and he told me the sire, but it went in one ear and out the other. I wish I could remember, but I can't for the life of me! Later, I saw him warming up his horse and talking to a lady standing not too far from us. He told her that the horse was solid chestnut at birth, and that it still has faint chestnut points. Then a light bulb went off in my head...dominant white! I didn't think that DWs could be found in Appies, but I'm not totally sure that that horse was fully appy (he had striped hooves, but a different body type than what's typical). I really would like to know what color this horse is. Even if it's not DW, I'd love to know what appy pattern this would be considered. Here are some pics: [img]http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/h372/TMWGraphics/Photography/PLS%20…] [img]http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/h372/TMWGraphics/Photography/PLS%20…] ^I found it really interesting that his tail was still dark. I just thought he was really interesting looking. :) Thanks!

I didn't read your post (sorry)... and I was about to tell you "appaloosa" when I decided to double check your post. :rofl

What would be causing the hair in the colored spots to be so white? Gray? Or can they varnish that fast?

Usually grey Appy's don't varnish that quickly do they? Mine didn't, and he had a lot more color left on his face and legs.

Mine was "white" by 4 years of age and he was a snow cap, The blanket on that one looks snow cap to me.

Interesting, the blanket does look snowcap, do they grey faster then?

Thanks everyone!

I guess my main question would be why was he born solid chestnut then?

rodeoratdogs Sun, 02/06/2011 - 12:57

He probably meant that he was born solid chesnut with the snowcap blanket and the rest of him went grey, common thing in Appy's, sometimes they stay the color they are when they are born but often they get more and more white as they age, only leaving traces of their original color on their face shoulders hips and legs.

Looks to me like an Appaloosa that turned grey. There are a few popular sires that are grey -- Alias King, Spotted Bull, I Love Willie, etc. -- so grey Appaloosas are more common than they used to be. Too bad.

Mine wasnt a grey he was chestnut, he varnish roaned by 4 yo. Dam was a bay snowflake, sire a bay leopard.

Mine was born chestnut with a snowflake pattern on his rump, he varnished but much slower, I want to say he didn't finish getting lighter until he was 6-8 years old, his dam was also varnish, and he was also sired by a leapord. I shouldn't have said grey I meant varnish.

It could be a couple of things--he could have "roaned out" (varnish roan at work), and I've seen them "go" white slow and fast, or it could be grey at work (know a grey QH that was born solid black and 10 days later was solid white), or it could be both things. Without parent information, hard to say.
