Re: Do you see another possibly unknow modifier at work??
mindari mentions down the posts that her herd has been tested for dilutions all were negative? Is that what we're talking about? It's confusing as to whether that's what she saying exactly about the horse in the Original Pic, or the rest of her herd....
I THINK that she (mindari) originally was just saying that looking at his progeny, because most of them are smokey blacks, that you'd never guess their sire was double dilute. IOW, he has no buckys or pallys yet.
My thesis is that the sire definitely doesn't carry agouti and all the mares must have been hetero or don't carry it either.
Re: Do you see another possibly unknow modifier at work??
She's on the silver yahoo chat list, mostly her ponies aren't tested and she posts them there saying she's not sure what they are. That buckskin, Pebbles I think it was, looks just buckskin but with browny points and there was a discussion about her having something extra that made her points brown. Everyone was just saying either silver, or some buckskins do just have brown points. As you say I don't think there is anything weird going on really, the colours are within the normal range for silvers and silver/creams and creams, which is a pretty wide range anyway!!
She calls that stallion a perlino but his sire is a silver dapple & dam a buckskin, he can't be a perlino then.
The sire could easily have cream as well, and in their photo bucket of him they call him a "Smoky Black Silver"

Re: Do you see another possibly unknown modifier at work??
I would have thought that, if she is breeding him, she would have tried to work out what she was likely to get, as what he is throwing is pretty normal...but, then I guess everyone has to start somewhere!!!
If he is H/Z for Black and does not carry Agouti it is going to be pretty hard on anyone that hopes to breed a Palomino from him!!
A friend had a very lucky escape from just this only recently, he had decided to add a CrCr stallion to his Spotted Ponies on a "can't lose" basis as he was having a hard time placing solid Bay and Soled Chestnut foals and was getting quite a high percentage of solid Chestnuts (stallion is by a Chestnut O/O a bay base) so thought this would be a good idea.
The CrCr he went to see he did turn down on the basis that it was not correct, silly woman that owned it had it tested for Cream....it is CrCr... :sign
Anyhoo, it sold eventually and it turned out to be Smoky Cream, H/Z for Black!!!
So, useless to him anyway.
Re: Do you see another possibly unknow modifier at work??
Her horses really don't look that unusual to me. I personally have no idea what she's seeing.
Titania looks like a bay silver to me, and looks especially so when clipped, and according to her that's what she tests as.
