Appy Mare
I don't know SQUAT about appys. My friend is selling this mare for a friend and I don't know what pattern to call her but she is obviously a chestnut. :) Thanks. Varnish roan. LP but no PATN

Varnish roan. LP but no PATN genes to speak of. Is she tested for frame? That's a pretty bold blaze for no leg white.

She isn't tested for anything

She isn't tested for anything I imagine. My friend has her in on consignment and the owners just have her as a trail horse. They don't know anything about color. They were calling her a frosty appy. I was pretty certain she was varnish but I don't even pretend to know enough about appy genetics to understand all the patterns and names. xD

So varnish is one lp?

I told my friend to pass along the frame info to any potential buyers. Just to be safe.

Varnish can be h/z or H/Z,

Varnish can be h/z or H/Z, but they don't have enough PATN to express the pattern enough to determine which it is.

Frosty is another term for

Frosty is another term for varnish roan. Snowflake is also another term/expression of varnish roan, with white forming in clumps instead of speckles.

From the look of her I wouldn't be surprised if she is just heterozygous LP with sabino boosting the varnish expression. The vast majority of homozygous LP horses have mostly white, or all white hoof horn. Her's look very solidly pigmented so I'm leaning toward heterozygous. Most heterozygous LP varnish horses often have some spots form with the varnish, but she lacks it. But,sabino causes LP to boost and reduce, or even remove, spots from forming in heterozygous LP horses. If you look near where her barrel and shoulder meet you can see very tiny reduced spots untouched by the varnish. So with that blaze of her's hinting to sabino and her solid hooves that's my drawn out diagnosis. I'd still be curious about her LWO status. :P

Yea, the owners were

Yea, the owners were discussing with us about breeding her to our Friesian to get a spotted cross but I told them I wouldn't even waste my time if I were them and would instead find a few spot (am I right?). Because I just got the feeling that this mare would likely produce something solid.

And honestly, I hate seeing people want to breed colored horses to our stud just because they have a pretty color they want combined...

Figured they'd be disappointed in both aspects.

you would need a patterened

you would need a patterened app parent ( or one lp and one patn parent - which is very unlikely friesans have patn) to produce a patterened foal

I have yet to see a foal

I have yet to see a foal inherit PATN from a Friesian parent and a varnish roan. And all of the leopard Friesian cross foals I've seen were born near leopards, which means they very likely only had one PATN1 gene they inherited from the appy parent.

Doesn't mean they 100% dont have PATN there (It's like agouti in a breed of chestnuts), but from the examples I've seen they would have a disappointing outcome if they wanted a certain color from that mare and a Friesian.
