Appy Colt

I know ZIP about appys... lol My friend Heather and I dropped off an appy that was on consignment back in February to this ranch in the desert. I was checking out the lady's FB page today to see if she posted any new photos of the guy, plus she had this adorably FAT appy stallion that I wanted to see if she had a photo of and I stumbled across this guy... Never seen an app like this. Whats causing it?? [img]http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/223143_126023810825986_1…]

A missmark. Not terribly uncommon. If it doesn't varnish it's likely a somatic mutation of the LP gene being switched off. He is the first fewspot I've seen with one.

Thanks so much for sharing him!

I messaged his owner and she said she doesn't have photos of him right now but that his other side looks pretty much the same.

During our conversation she mentioned, "Yeah but he is going to hard to breed to another Appy due to his color, his mom is the black with him and his sire was a leopard with small spots. I thought he was unique, thats why I bought him."

Leopard with small spots = sabino, so it is likely this guy is a false fewspot. And again, I'd be wanting to know if there was any possibility of grey...grey on appy starts at the head and works back.

The foal himself doesn't seem to have any signs of inheriting sabino that I can see. With the mismark on both sides of the neck it could just be how PATN formed on him. Some foals will have white on the head and on the body but have normal colored patches on the neck.

If he was born that way I doubt gray.
