Anyone heard of a "Pintabian"?
I was just watching rural tv and there was a programme about Ravenwood Arabians and I`m totally inlove with Ravenwood Monee...such a beautiful black bay arab. But the most interesting thing is they had a red and white arab, well they said he was 128th arab (whatever that means) and was also a registered "pintabian" Has anyone else heard of a pintabian? They even had a frame overo and a palomino with perfect arabian characteristics!! Georgeous!!!

edit to add: says he is 127/128 arabian...it's a percentage thing of how much arab they are. Reg. PtHA and Pintabian

no..he is mostly of arab blood... 127/128 arab. His sire is full arab..so you know there he is at least half.

They have actually been around for a very long time. There is an organized registry, or there was - the emergence of sabino has overshadowed them in the past decade.

I posted at the same time as you haha, didnt know we knew who he was, and figured the 1/128th thing was wrong because...what would be the point of calling him arab then haha

i just hate the term for it

I hate the term for it too, as well as any other term that is just two breed names squashed together. Quarab, Welara, Araloosa, yuck. I guess it's just one of my personal peeves but I always pronounce both breeds, e.g. my student's horse is a Welsh Cob/Arabian cross gelding. Calling him a Welara sounds cheesy.

So do I...its like putting dignified animals like horses into the same category as "Brangalina" or "TomKat" YUK!

Yep Red, thats the one!! :flower I must have misunderstood the percentage thing...127/128 makes more sense and he most certainly looks all arab. Beautiful! One question tho...why isnt it 99.5% arab or something like that, as apposed to a percentage of 128???

Pintabain = pinto arabian, I think. Like walkafugafreisaloosabian. Ok i made that one up. Similar naming style to the labradoodles ect. Instead of a arab appaloosa cross you have a pure bred araloosa. Silly really.

it's just easier to calculate I guess. And gives you a better idea. I mean...
1 is purebred, cross that and you get 1/2, cross that and you get 1/4, then 1/8, 1/16, 1/32, 1/64, cross it a seventh time and you get 1/128
so i guess it makes more sense to me to use fractions rather than percentages.

You could call your mare anything you like, basically, and I too hate the part bred Arabs being called anything except Part Bred Arab....there is a place within the society for them, why fuss about the pattern?
It can only lead to the devaluing of the solid ones.

I always say part bred arabs for mine. Because that is what they are registered as. But if I don't say the other half, I get asked anyway, so have to always say part this, part that.

:rofl That made my day... :rofl

I have to admit to using "Quarab" It was just easier to say that "Quarter Horse/Arab" But I have it easier now, I have a part Arab and don't really know what other part is. :P (except that it was small, white, and mean) I just call her "Arab cross" since "Half-Arab" in my mind is used more for the registered ones and I don't even know her dam's real name, just that she was indisputably purebred.

People almost always say part [their breed of choice]. The Arab sporthorse lady down the road always says she has part Arabs (their other half is various warmblood breeds). My Welsh breeder friends always say part or half Welsh, no matter what the other half is.

Hmmm. I have two different ways to think about it...
Would you say chocolate coffee? No.. You say Mocha...
Would you say Tb/QH? No, it'd be Appendix...
So I think it depends on how many there seem to be of a certain cross..
Quarab and Welera don't bother me. Aralusian or Araloosa sound rediculous though.
It's people's nature to be lazy when speaking so putting two common crosses together is just natural I think.

I think I would be useless at making up names - I think its easier to say part bred.

Oh that's funny!!!

I know someone with a Gypsy cob cross shetland and they call it a coblan, as it sounds like goblin which could be quite apt too

Re: Anyone heard of a "Pintabian"?

Actually, I think "part bred arab" is ok to use for a half arab, or even a 3/4 arab but when 7 generations of pure bred arabs have been used and the horse is 127/128th pure arab, (thanks krickette! :flower ) I think it should be called an arab! Just my opinion.... plus if you look at the ravenwood arabs, they are beautiful examples of what an arab should look like. :love :love

But it isn't an Arab, that is the whole point of the word "Purebred"!
It never will be an Arab, so what is the point of breeding them that way??
The Pintos could be a lot prettier, far quicker, and with much less financial outlay, if they just put a bit of Section A in there!
We had a mare who, except that she was far prettier than any Arab I had ever seen, and was 13.2hh (which in itself does not disbar her) you'd have said was pure.
Bred to a 7/8ths Palomino she bred animals that would have knocked any purebred into a cocked hat (no Palominos, though!) so, what was the point?
Better to have bred her to a small TB and got an Anglo looking pony that could be registered Show Pony......
When you pin your hopes on colour or pattern there is a far higher "wastage" than when you just aim at good, solid, well conformed animals.

Bred to a 7/8ths Palomino

A "7/8ths" Palomino??? But Creme is there or it's not. It's not a breed. The point of putting the percentage is how close to pure it is... for partbreds, you can't be registered as a partbred and be that close to purebred right? Or am I thinking of anglos?.... So a 127/128 is not even a partbred, and it's not a purebred either. So...ya, why breed it?

I don't know what I'm arguing....

I believe you can be registered Half Arab up to ANY high percentage as long as one parent was pure bred Arab.

Not sure how it is for Anglos.

It was Anglos I was thinking of:

Then this is a rule from the Anglo-arabian rule:
The horse has no less than 25% Arabian blood and no more than 75% Arabian blood. (If the horse has more than 75% Arabian blood, but would otherwise qualify for registration in the Anglo-Arabian Horse Registry, it is eligible for registration in the Half-Arabian Horse Registry.)
