First foal on this page has a clear dorsal stripe as well.

Re: Dun???
Hey Acc here's something for you to research if you get a chance....grullablue has on her web site that bay dun foals are generally born with brown or red dorsals and the photos she has show that. Most of the photos she has of buckskin foals with countershading, the dorsals are black. I'm just wondering how common that is and if it might be a kinda loose rule of thumb that could be used....
Re: Dun???
The first two babies on the sire's website show dorsals. I think he's got so much sooty going on that it almost hides the dorsal stripe... ACC, you're good at getting photos from people... Ask them for a picture of his back for us nuts! :?
Either way that baby is adorable!
Re: Dun???
Countershading can be very convincing. One interesting and usual thing about that stripe is how INKY it is. It literally almost looks wet with black ink. Most of the time when I see those, it's countershading. True dun seems to blend with the coat better (texture and hue wise) while still being very defined.
There's another clue... I think it's pretty uncommon for bay duns to have black dorsals.
Re: Dun???
Primitive markings are the color that the horse would be on that part of the body if it weren't diluted. Dorsal stripes on bay duns would be bay/red in color. Their leg stripes are black because they have the black legs of a bay though they are red the further up the leg you go. I put several pics of bay dun markings in the dun photo gallery if you want to take a look at them.

Then why are dunskins dorsals dark??
For example:

Re: Dun???
Possibly sooty related RMT. Dun seems to block the effect of sooty, but it wouldn't do that in the area of the primitive markings. Since many buckskins have countershading that seems to be caused by sooty, that would make sense. Remember all those buckskins we've seen with the heavy layer of sooty over the whole topline (and pretty much only the topline, almost like black snow) and how many of them mimic dun very well.

Yes that could be it.
Though I dont think Ive ever seen a stripe on a dunskin that WASN'T black.
Re: Dun???
I don't see a single black stripe in all of these photos, except on one who is believed to be a "brown dun" (which if that is a seal brown base would explain why the topline looks black):

Most of the foals have RED looking dorsal stripes.
Re: Dun???
That could just be how they work together somehow. Have you ever seen a black stripe on a bay dun without cream?
Ive seen more very dark red dorsals than truly "bay" colored dorsals.
Off the top of my head this is the only one I can remember seeing being "red" and I was actually looking for it.

Most I have seen, that I remember, are this color

Re: Dun???
You can't copy photos from DCS's site. I can't see them. Are they foals or adults? Most bay dun foals have red stripes. Most bay dun adults have bay or brownish stripes. When cream is involved, it does seem to change things. *nods*
Can you find an example of a bay dun or dunskin foal with a stripe similar to the OP foal?
Re: Dun???
Sure looks Dun to me- right down to his colour and ear tips.
What colour is the sire?- Can I guess Grey? :rofl
