So I saw the image of this splash tobiano icelandic foal awhile ago. It appeared that his front was chestnut while his rump was black. Well it ends up that he's 3 years old now and that's what he still looks like today.

ahhh! thank you! I was just wondering about this one the other day when I showed a friend his foal picture. Very cool
That is crazy!
Does he have black also under his ear in those pictures? (Can't tell what it is on my screen...)
It looks like it to me too Swing.
Wasn't that other odd somatic an Icelandic as well? Odd that this isolated breed is cropping up so many mutations...
Ugh, now I regret sitting outside on the computer. I can't see this picture well enough! From what I can see that is awesome. That's one horse I don't cringe when it's called tricolored.
Would this be considered a somatic mutation or chimeric to you guys? Or something completely different??
Would also like to see his other side..
Part of me is really leaning toward chimeric, but then there is so much of him covered by white that I'm hesitant to say one way or another personally.
Not that this has an influence on my thinking, but there are at least 2 other black / chestnut basedlikely chimeric Icelandics that I can think of off the top of my head.
Wait I have pics!
Would be neat if he gets tested to be confirmed chimeric or not.

his butt is cute XD!
Its interesting to see that all three examples are chestnut with (presumably) black.
I'm still finding it strange that 3 confirmed chimeric QH I know of are all red dun. Dunbars Gold, Sharp One, and Tri A Brindle.

That red white & black one is awesome! He looks like a flag or somthing.
Your first pic is not an Icelandic horse. It is an Aegidienberger, a breed made up from crossing Paso Peruanos with Icelandics. Other than that I would have thought the vulcanic activitiy might have been a trigger for mutations, but Aegidienberger are bred in Germany... :-?
Theres also this Chestnut and Black APHA

what the heck is going on with that Qhs white markings lol! Its also that he has the "black and tan" tender spots where the white isn't covering it.
I always loved that guy! He is a fun one. Pretty sure he's splash white with some sabino going on.

Just found out from my friend who found his photos that someone who reads Icelandic translated the owner's website and he is confirmed chimeric!
