When explaining color to people new to the field, one often runs into resistance and misunderstanding that is rooted in the registries themselves.
From that rises the question:
Lets take the example of a smoky black. What do registries call it? Can the horse be registered on true content in all registries? (if the owner knows what they've got, or course) How about if we make it a smoky cream? :?
Re: What do they call it?
Most registries that I know of reg. smokey black as black. I am not sure about smokey cream other than AQHA doesn't have it (or smokey black) listed as an approved color. APHA has finally accepted a smokey cream filly based on DNA testing from UC Davis (she was just reg. last year). I guess that means there is hope for other registries...lol :laugh1
What I find the hardest to overcome is the decades of misinformation that individuals are convinced is fact. You can tell them until you are blue in the face that just because that buckskin has a dorsal doesn't make it a dun... especially if dad was a black and mom a palomino... lol.
