Young Breeder's First Foals
A young friend of mine is starting up her own breeding operation, and she just had her first 2 foals from her senior stallion. The really funny thing is that she knew he was heterozygous black, but she had bred him to a black mare and a grey mare - and both foals have been chestnut! I laughed and laughed. She loves them all the same. She did have one outside foal, a halfbred out of a black WB mare. He was black. Colt has a star and 2 hind socks, but sire has no white, and I think dam has a faint star IMAGE(http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3328/3510793186_e4299c34a6.jpg) IMAGE(http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3634/3510792942_7bb68e2fff.jpg) This colt will grey. This happens so often, you begin to wonder if that 25 % chance isn't really higher! :laugh1 I know black is supposed to be dominate, but really! I bet she forgot to turn around counter clockwise three times and stand on one foot during the breeding! :laugh1 :laugh1

Even better, this stallion had about 20 foals before she owned him, and only 1 has been chestnut.

I guess so! But I have to admire her, black or not, she is so willing to promote them, she is offering to PAY the buyer's way into the 2 year old jackpot at the Arabian Sport Horse Nationals (class fee, stall fee, etc.) for one of these colts.

That's smart of her. One of the reasons I'm keeping Ditto is so I can promote our prefix. I love all my ponies, but I'd rather show my ponies than someone else's prefix. Chances for beginner breeders to be taken seriously without having your stock out in public is tough.

Re: Young Breeder's First Foals

A couple of points stick out for me, the first and most important to me is that if this is a breeder who intends to make this her business she needs to look first and foremost to her facilities because I can assure you that if I were looking for a top class Arab, and neither of those colts is this, I would NOT shop at a farm that has sagging wire fences, sorry, just would not do it.
My priority, when I first took over my little 12 acre enterprise, was to get rid of every piece of barbed wire on the place and I did it.
It was very expensive but I think it has paid for itself.
I have field fencing, which is not a lot more expensive to buy than strand wire, and I did a filed at a time.
I also have some post and rail, not a lot, but enough to look good!!!
The first colt looks to be a good performance prospect, he is too long in the back, but he will look better under saddle, his tail set is also low, but he uses himself well, so again, that will not notice too much under saddle, especially if he can jump.
The second colt just does not take my eye at all, he needs a good worming and a good feed up too, if you are promoting an animal it has to look as if it can go in the ring, right now.
I wish her luck, but I do not think she is on the right track if these animals are the result.

I thought you guys might be interested to see how these colts turned out. The grey colt, Candescent, was sold and is being kept as a stallion prospect by the new owner. He is currently in professional training to be a WP horse on his breed circuit. He is very tall, pushing 15.3hh, I think, and not done growing. Since he's a purebred, and neither parent that tall, it was surprising. These were taken by her as an amateur photo shoot.

This is Catalyst, the little chestnut. The breeder did ask to excuse the terrible fencing, these paddocks are the ones she used only for getting pictures. But she has now relocated to Texas anyway.

This was the outside foal, the warmblood cross colt. She was not the breeder, but she did take the colt to Sporthorse Nationals on her own dime in the 2 year old jackpot. He top tenned for her. I think this one is a very nice animal indeed.

Just saw an update on the black colt. I updated his sales ad. He was apparently sold to CA, to a former member of the Finnish Olympic team, to pursue high level dressage. It looks like all of these boys are facing bright futures at the moment, and should be good representatives for their sire.

This will probably be the last update on the gray colt, Candescent. Not that he belongs in the foal section anymore, but I like to follow them as they grow up. He is being marketed by his new owner now and he looks very, very good. He goes english and western, has already won a western pleasure class, and is being trained in dressage as well. His breeder has ridden him and says he is incredibly kind and consistent, just like his sire. I'm impressed, and I think he has turned out to be a very nice testament to her first breeding effort.
