Worried Mummy help * updated with Pics*

I am hoping someone can give me some advice. Brianna is now 18 months old, she still nurses from me at night but not during the day. She has recently been drinking from her bottle 3 - 4 240ml bottles a day that was until Yesterday, she was sick once yesterday morning - now she wont drink hardly anything from it maybe 180ml all day and is not taking much from me either - she has also decided that most foods are also off the menu. I know that she is having a hard time teething but I am at my wits end - she has only had 1 wet nappy today. I have tried offering her my decafe tea from my mug - she had a little and giving her some chocolate flavoured milk that was part of the 180ml she had. Am I supposed to be this worried or is this just the way they are......please tell me am very tearful and worried. :sad

Have you thought about or tried icepops? You can get ones that are mostly fruit juice so they are healthier then the sugar filled ones. The cold helps the teeth and you are happy because she gets more fluids into her. One day is not so bad, hang in there.

lipigirl Tue, 12/15/2009 - 16:43

Thanks yes have thought of those but it's so cold here at the mo I am trying to keep her warm. I am sorry to be such a worry wort but I am trying to juggle looking after her with sorting the house move out and the stress is winning.

I will see how she is in the morning and hopefully things will be better.

NZ Appaloosas Tue, 12/15/2009 - 16:45

What Adell said...yes they are a worry, and this could be something not to fret about, but could also become something to fret about. Growing kids do hit stages where they seem to eat nothing, but it does need to be watched. My daughter went thru' a stage like that when she was about 8...choked on a hot dog (yep, real choke, Heimlich required, etc.). After that, we had a battle every time food was placed in front of her that required "hefty" chewing (i.e., wasn't small veggies or 'slurpy' food).

It's very likely she's currently got an association between sicking up and drinking/eating. Ice pops will help get her past that, will get her some of the nutritients and hydration she needs (can you get Pedialyte ice pops in the UK?), and hopefully get her past the psychological block she's putting in place. Give her small finger foods that she likes (do you have Cheerios cereal?) that she can eat at her own pace. What about warm soup, does she like that? If it contnues for more than a day or so, put a call into your doctor to see what advice s/he may have.

I really wouldn't worry too much. My son ate nothing between the age of one and two but digestive biscuits and soya milk, he weighed the same at two as he did at one :? yet the doctors didn't seem that worried
Also my daughter caught something like noro virus at about three and didn't eat or drink for a week, she looked appalling, but she soon recovered and got back to normal, I think mostly on Melon and Wotsits! I always used Dioralyte if I thought they were getting dehydrated, you get it in sachets, from the chemist. I use it for animals too! I also sometimes mixed Ovaltine with my daughter's milk (when she was 18 months-2 years) to get her to drink it, not the instant stuff, the sort you mix with milk.

NZ Appaloosas Wed, 12/16/2009 - 00:12

I'll second the ovaltine! I used the powdered stuff (as that's the only type of ovaltine I know ), and it didn't take much, just enough to give a bit of flavour and colour to the milk. Of course, talking up the "magic" abilities of the stuff helped. LOL

It may also be that she had a mild stomach virus and was still feeling sick. I wouldn't worry much about her not eating unless it goes on for more than 3 days or so. If she doesn't start drinking more soon keep an eye on her for dehydration and call your doctor if she starts exhibiting signs of that otherwise I'd just let it runs its course.

Hope she gets to feeling better soon,

Daylene

lipigirl Wed, 12/16/2009 - 09:37

Thanks, she is still not drinking today unless it's from me and as I've said that is not much. I think she is teething but I also agree that maybe she has an association with drinking and being sick ! Not too sure why but she has eaten some fruit at lunchtime and a breadstick - poor little one is not herself though and is very down. I am trying some of those things to see if I can get some more fluids in her but she is not allowed animal milk so is on Oatmilk but I know you can get a non-dairy form of chocolate so will try that.

Thank you for your help - I really hate this ! :(

Mashed potato....best weaning food in the known universe because you can put anything with it at all!!! Even Ovaltine, if it floats her boat.
I know you know this but try not to let her know you are worried, kids pick up on that very quickly and they just can't resist playing you!
You can freeze apple juice, maybe with a little bit of glucose in it, too?
Or you can just give her oranges until she starts to get a fake tan....loads of juice in oranges, Just make sure before you do that, that she is not allergic to them, my mother filled me full of the stuff, even got it free off the National Health cos I nearly died and was considered at risk....you couldn't get oranges as we were still on rationing.
I am allergic to citrus juice, orange, lemon, lime and grapefruit make me quite ill.
Then they wondered why I was taking so long to get better....course I was too young to tell them and I was in my teens before we found out what was causing all these muscle spasms and disorientation etc.
So, since you know already that she has allergies, just check that one, will you? :rofl
An apple put in the microwave for two minute goes to mush, and, with honey on top, is delicious!!
Hope this clears up soon.
PS I am 100% behind you on the "natural weaning" thing, let her comfort suck as long as she wants, I say!

lipigirl Wed, 12/16/2009 - 14:15

Well, she ate a bit this afternoon and drank 300mls, although she has not peed this afternoon !!! .... am very happy about the drinking though. The Health Visitor says that there is a lot of Rotavirus in the community at the mo and she thought it was that as Bri has had some spectacular Nappies today and yesterday (Diapers)- it may account for me feeling Nauseous all day too as Adults have some immunity to it. So hopefully she is on the mend now and will feel better soon.

Thank you again my friends for your advice. ;)

Bannerminis Wed, 12/16/2009 - 14:32

I know how you feel - I have had all 3 kids sick over the last 2 wks and the were taking turns till last weekend when they decided to raise their temps together and stop eating.

Grace (4) and resembles a whippet was throwing up and couldnt keep so much as a spoonful of water down, no energy, rash, green nose, slighly raised temp, inflamed throat oh and not forgetting the rash around her mouth and the trout pout - her top lip looked like a lip filler gone bad.
Brought her to Shannon Doc and the doc gave her an antibiotic but wasnt happy with her. Next day brought her to my own doc and he was too flumoxed but took her off the antibiotic and said she looked like a kids that had a virus but was having a sort of allergic reaction to it. He put her on an antihistamine only 1/2 tsp to be taken before bed. She got so bad before bed I thought I would be back to the shannon doc but got paralink into her and motillium via a supository (sp?) and she brightened and then gave her the antihistamine and the next morning to my surprise she was a different kid - thankfully or otherwise doc was send her to Peads in Limerick.
She is still slow to eat but getting there and actually I think she is a little anemic so have her on Kiddie Pharmaton.

Any fluids you little girl is getting is better then none. And like the others said ice lollies are a way to go and yes its cold now but maybe let her eat it in front of the fire.
Mine always seem to like 7 up and it does boost them a little.
As for the eating - Grace was a serious grubber when she was young and now she eats like a bird and its a real battled every day to get to her to eat her meals - but she wont beat me yet lol.
Hope Brianna feels better soon :flower

NZ Appaloosas Wed, 12/16/2009 - 16:40

On the iron thing, again I found ovaltine to be helpful. Don't know how much help if someone were truly anemic, but did make a difference the time my daughter tested low (but not at "worry" level). Her next test, after a week of drinking ovaltine, showed the proper levels.

I am sorry Banner that your little one has been so bad - allergies are weird things aren't they ??!!

It is weird for me as Brianna has always been a bit of a piggy food wise so this is a shock to me. I also worried she looked Anaemic too today but she has never looked as bad as she did when she was in SCBU and had Iron levels so bad that they gave her a blood transfusion...I must rememeber that kids get ill and they get better -I am still struggling I am afraid with the Post Natal Depression sometimes it's like a cloud comes over me - wish I was a happy person like I used to be, although some days are good days now which is nice......don't know what I would do without you guys sometimes.

Hugs to you all.xx

At what age can kids start eating honey? I know it's very very bad for infants, but I don't know when that changes.

NZ Appaloosas Wed, 12/16/2009 - 23:47

definitely not before the age of 2. not sure when exactly, but they definitely don't have the digestive system to break down the honey before that age. Something to do with not being able to produce an enzyme, from memory.

Diane

Monsterpony Thu, 12/17/2009 - 02:26

Nope, honey is not recommended because of the high likelihood of botulism...low enough not to affect adults with developed immune systems, but could sicken an infant. I believe the cut off is one year.

lipigirl Thu, 12/17/2009 - 03:49

Yep I think it is 1 yr too.

Well, she seems brighter today - I've got it now feel very sick - poor little love if this is how she was feeling no wonder she didn't want to eat or drink.

Bannerminis Thu, 12/17/2009 - 04:55

Great she is feeling better not so good now you have it though.

I suffered depression after I had Conor but was in serious denial - took me over 2 yrs to recover properly from it.

Dont worry about Briannas eating - like I said when Grace was younger up to the age of about 2 1/2 to 3yrs she ate like a pig but then stopped and started eating with her eyes. Its still a battle but she is improving.

Conor did the same thing and I had to be strict with him or he wouldnt have eaten a thing except rubbish and now he eats me out of house and home and he is only 7. I always know when he is sick when he stops eating and even turns down the goodies

Must try the Ovaltine with Grace - thanks for that tip :)

OMG thats just sooooooo cute. She looks like a real little sweetie pie.

Oh and the Ovaltine has gone down a treat with Grace - she loves it. Thankfully I havent had to resort to mixing it with mashed potato

rabbitsfizz Sat, 12/19/2009 - 08:43

:bounce The absolute beauty of mashed potato is that you can mix anything at all with it...I mixed an egg and butter (not recommended for Brianna) cooked it in the microwave, et voila, a meal!!!!
She is a sweetie, and no mistake, I can't believe she has grown up so fast though. Where does the time go??
Take photos, thousands and thousands of them, and video, video everything!!
You'll be a Grandmother before you can turn round twice if you aren't careful!!!
