will these spots stay?

This colt is out of a reg AQHA buckskin mare and a reg AQHA solid chestnut stallion. Will these spots stay? Can spots 'hide' for several generations? Would testing his color reveal anything? Since his mom looks pretty classic buckskin and dad was a regular chestnut I am fairly confident he is palomino, but he does seem to have blue eyes. I did not see the dad up close(I bought the mare in foal) so there could have been anomolies I am not aware of. thank you for your help

oops silly me.

I put the pictures in my gallery, under colorfan. I will try to add them to the post to make it easier.

Do either dam or sire have any appaloosa charateristics? Lp can hide in non-PATN horses for many generations. Reminic in Spots is a prime example.

how very neat...nothing to say either way here..but I'll be watching this for sure! interesting!

Super neat! More info please!
(also, some palmonios are born with blue eyes, so you're probably right on the base color).
That is just crazy though!

What MP said...there are a few "surprises" popping up, now that AQHA has relaxed their excessive white rules. A link to this guy's pedigree might provide some answers.

Thank you for moving the photos, makes it much easier.

So, The dams registered name is Sure Bet Sarina, the sire is Why Docs Steel.
I don't know very much about appy colors, are there some that don't show on certain colors? Like silver on chestnut? Are some like chestnut where they only express if there are two copies?
Can they hide for several generations?

The only characteristic the dam may have is some white around her eye.
I will post a picture of her, I don't have any of the sire.
If she is very calm her whole eye is dark but as soon as she is worked up even just a bit she shows white.

I am going away for the weekend.
When I get back I will try to take some eye pics of the foal.
Krickette, were you just wanting info in general or something specific?

thank you

Appy doesn't hide on any coat colors except maybe double dilute creams, roans and greys could camoflauge them. The thing about appy is that it requires both the spotting gene, Lp, and also another gene/genes termed PATN that allows the Lp to show. If one parent carries an Lp gene and the other carries the genes required for Lp to show than they can produce a spotted foal.

MP, that's the .
On a completely different not, my Tobiano base Silver Bay stallion has spots as definite as that and is definitely NOT Appy.
His son, who also has the spots and is NOT Appy, has won a Pintaloosa class (not his owners idea, the people at the show insisted she enter that division of the "colour" class!!!
With them it is Sabino, I think, but it is weird.
I meant to get pictures today, I was going to start a thread on him, then I got sidetracked by something shiny and wandered off and forgot...... :rofl
