Who's Breeding for 2011 Foals?

I haven't had foals since 2008 and I miss them, and since I finally sold most of youngsters off as well as a few others, I'm having a nice, big breeding year! How do you get an ultrasound? Is it rectal? An how far does it have to go in? Just the wand, or is there hand/arm involved? LOL. Sorry to get graphic, but my vet won't palpate or ultrasound the ponies because he says they're too small. Granted, he's got large hands, but unless I take them to the hospital, it's a guessing game.

Wow... I've heard of not palpating minis, but not Welsh. But given that mare is Arab cross I'd suspect she's bigger than your average Welsh.

rabbitsfizz Fri, 03/26/2010 - 10:22

My Vets are more than happy to rectal my Minis, always have done, that's how I get the results I do.
I don't bother these days as it's too expensive.

I've always gotten rectal ultrasounds, even on Tickle who isn't much bigger than your Section A's, Andrea. I do a rectal ultrasound with every breeding to check for twins. Especially in mares who have TB blood it's very common. Tiffany twinned every time...

Andrea Fri, 03/26/2010 - 17:39

Interesting. Even Silo's breeder recommended against rectal as one of their mares was put down after the wand punctured the colon or something like that... I don't like chancing twins.
I'll call my vet next week and see if he's changed his thoughts. Even when Silo coliced, the smaller vet couldn't get her hand in...

Rectal yes, she's 13.3h so not that small ;) I did have a 29" mini rectally U/S once, the vet I used had small arms. She tried transabdominal but couldn't see a foal, and we REALLY thought she was pregnant. Luckily she was NOT (she was just a two year old I had bought, breeder said no way she could've been bred but BOY did she have us convinced!) Vet didn't want to due to her small size but we really wanted to know so the vet finally decided to do the rectal so we'd know for sure!

I'm also thinking of breeding this mare to my stallion, but the foal would be a keeper as a replacement for her as she's getting older and my favorite trail mare. I have no idea of her breeding, some people have told me she looks to carry some welsh or arab blood, but I honestly don't know, any guesses?

She is only like 14.2, maybe a tad smaller, but has a massive build, so she is a pony.

Sara Sat, 03/27/2010 - 01:11

Oh, you asked for breed guesses! She looks almost cobby, and I think you guys have more of those over there than we do here, so maybe a Section D x APHA or something like that. She has a very pretty face.

JazzyPaintsnQtrs Sat, 03/27/2010 - 01:18

Her face looks kind of welsh to me, she has the big doe eye and expressive refined head and face, she has a thicker neck and a huge rump. She is a little weaker in the back to me, but the parts where she is weaker, so far my stallion has thrown stronger in his foal's conformation, so I'm hoping for a loud tobiano with her head, but his back and hip.

I noticed the neck which is part of what makes me lean toward some sort of Welsh Cob cross. My student's Sec D cross has a cresty neck even when he's on the thin side.

Edited to say the old fashioned Cobs tended to have some pretty strung-out, weak backs so that's further evidence.

JazzyPaintsnQtrs Sat, 03/27/2010 - 01:26

She always has a cresty neck, it's part of her conformation, the only time she didn't have it is when I got her back after I had sold her and she was emaciated =( but she was literally skin and bone at that point, and I'll never sell her again!

I have a Welsh D/Haflinger. Someone asked me if he has been gelded late due to his big neck... they were surprised when I said it's a MARE! LOL :)

Do you have a full body or conformation shot of that horse, from what I can see, the shoulder looks like it might be kinda similar to my mare, but my mare looks like a hulk, lol

I have one foal due this year my bay silver dilute QH mare bred to Cougar (I want an amber silver) and my palomino roan mare will be bred to Zan Parr Nic (a Reminic son out of Sparkles Rosanna) blue or bay roan is the wish from this breeding :)
