Re: Which Grulla

Since someone was mentioning other horses with LP that look like those above... A friend of the owner of the smoky black has a friend that has a tested smoky black that looks look this smoky black and that is why the owner ended up testing. (did you make it through that LOL)

Re: Which Grulla

Do you have other examples of "orange" coloured-tested Black- horses who were born very Chestnut coloured? If so please share! :D

Black stallion as a foal (tested to Eeaa). He was registered as bay.

Re: Which Grulla

Rabbit, the mare was born fairly typical of Dun if I remember correctly, and her birth base was nothing to be alarmed about (she started going "orange" at about a year old I think)
NZ- While it's true your stallion looked like he could of been Black as a baby (or even now)
He definitely didn't look like he was red based as opposed to the Smokey Cream gelding that is an "orange" colour.

I want to see other foals that were born looking red based test for Black even though they don't fit the Black phenotype. So apart from the orange gelding in question, are there any others out there? :?:

Missed this- could you get pictures? Any as a foal as well?

Re: Which Grulla

Does anyone else remember reading about a second e alle that was found? I remember reading a article about an Arabian who was tested EE and sired a chestnut foal. It was later found that he carried a rare e alle that was not commonly tested for at the time. Now I can't find the article....

This thread just made me think of that....

Yup I've heard about it. I think they all do test for it now though, but it would be worth asking.

Re: Which Grulla

No it is simply a second e alle, that wasn't tested for in some of the earlier tests. So theoretically a horse could test EE and be ee, however from what I understood the second e alle is pretty uncommon. I'm not even sure what breeds its been found it. They've fixed the tests now but seeing that EE aa Crcr appy brought it to mind.

Re: Which Grulla

I remember reading about that on the old forum - and it is supposed to be very rare. For some reason I am thinking European horses, but I could be wrong...

The rare e allel was being read by the old extension test as E, but it wasn't actually E (black). This lead to false EE results when it could in fact of been Ee or even ee (hense the chestnuts from blacks). They said that once it was discovered they "tweeked" the extension test so that it is now read as e and not E, but other than that, I can't say what is going on with the research/information.

And that would make much more sense! I faintly remember a discussion about the Ee alle. Wasn't on EC though.

Re: Which Grulla

The only one with even a snowballs chance of dun was #3 - **STOUT** the grulla mare (and she does have all the "primitive markings")...

As for the Paint - I like him, but I would insist on a LWO test on that one.... :hammer

Edited once to add: this looks like her pedigree (dates/names match) - but don't quote me on that one.
