what's wrong with me?
like...mentally? Is there such a thing as reverse anorexia? Because my mom and I have the same problem. I've been trying to loose weight for a while now and it's hard to be motivated. My cousin said one of her main tools is she put a picture of herself before her two kids up on the refridgerator as motivation to look like that again. But that wouldn't help me at all. See I still feel like I look great! I honestly don't think I am as fat as I am, I will walk in a room and still think I'm one of the best looking people in there, and not because big is beautiful, but because I still feel skinny. Well, I've never been "skinny", but I used to just be pretty and curvey, you know? Anyway, I had someone take pictures of me riding not long ago, and I was nearly sick when I looked at them. Like, I had no idea I looked that bad until now. I think part of the problem is that I've always had a decent upper body, though now even that is mostly gone. So when I look at myself in the mirror or just look down at myself, it doesn't seem so bad. I guess I need to hang the pictures of me riding up on the fridge. Just the thought of me in breeches and a tank top....yuck... I dunno, I'm just like, lost. Mom said she has the same problem though, that she feels like she's still skinny. I don't know....

Re: what's wrong with me?

I feel pretty until I see photos of myself too :( I'm losing weight, I've finally found a way that suits me- a combination of working and using meal replacement products. Its great, the bars are like a block of fudge and caramel with chocolate on, my dream breakfast plus I lose weight!
I have a meal replacement shake at work for lunch then eat a normal meal in the evening, whatever I want though I try to make it low fat- I don't like fried food and have cut right down on cheese (I'm veggie). Also I just don't buy in any food I know I will be tempted to eat as I have very weak willpower.
I feel thinner and my clothes don't feel tight, plus when we go for hikes I don't feel exhausted any more. I don't weigh myself because it all seems too slow and depressing. I think the main thing is have something to do- I have a day off work today, nothing important to do and I'm home alone so I'm eating too much. The main motivation for me is health- my mother has weight related diabetes and gallstones are common in my immediate family, and I have twinges there too if I eat too much fat.
I think you have to find what works for you, I've tried loads of different things until I hit on the latest that actually works for me.
Good luck! Would a motivational thread on here help? I've been on another board that has them. You can chart your progress and everyone can cheer you on :D

You are in the same boat I was in a year or so ago. My weight had gotten ridiculous but it just didn't seem that bad to me. Riding photos always seem to do the trick though. I finally kicked the mentality and kicked 40lbs with it. Wow, I hadn't realized it, but a year this weekend I've kept the full 40 off. Mind you I've been wanting to lose another 40 or so but honestly I haven't been working at it. For now I've been happy with the 40 off so I haven't pushed. It's time for more riding pics.....

Re: what's wrong with me?

I can't help as I only have to look at myself and I hate what i see, photos only make it worse, I have 36 lbs to lose at least but this underactive thyroid is just not helping at all - so when you find the answer let me know as I'd love to like myself again.

Re: what's wrong with me?

Hey guys I was just looking at our thread with all our pics and I think you need to go have another look and read! All the wonderfull comments and beautiful pics of you beautiful people!! :love I have struggled with my weight too over the last 18 months after breaking my leg and unable to walk for the first 6 months but very able to eat yummy things!! I have now toned down to a weight that doesn't look as good as I want but I'm able to walk up hills , load the truck with hay by myself, longrein horses all day and hopefully be riding in the next month. I suppose what I'm trying to say is don't hate yourselves!!! Look at the things your body can do and if there is something you have trouble doing..make that a challenge to acheive! (I just tell everyone I gave up my modelling caree a long time ago! )

Re: what's wrong with me?

I feel the same way also! I need to lose about 10lbs atleast, nothing like you guys, but I can relate. What I think you should go for is not getting skinny, but getting fit. Like if I wanted to only get skinny I could never do it, but I have a dual purpose... I want to get my cardio up to speed and my muscles a little bigger so I can compete better and not feel like I'm going to pass out after a stadium round or a cross country phase. Try to eat natural foods too, like meat, veggies, fruits, etc. I love my carbs way to much to do it myself ( hugeee pasta/bread fan) but what I do try to do is eat the serving size of everything. If I grab the goldfish I eat exactly how many it says a serving size is. Also try not to eat too much too fast, they say you can't tell you're truly full until 20 minutes after a meal. Also B12 shots help you lose weight really well.

I'd practice that first.. eating what you want, but in moderation. I think that's a huge problem for a lot of people and they don't even realize it. Then try and figure out a dual purpose for working out.

Re: what's wrong with me?

My motivation is that I hate shoping for clothes so I loose weight when my pants start not to fit one by one. :rofl (it all goes to my thighs) I have jeans from 7 to 10 and usually keep in around 8. If I'm stuck in the 10s I know I'm in trouble.

Re: what's wrong with me?

One thing I do when I want to loose is just not have the things that I know I will eat too much of around at all.
And back away from the snack aisle at the convenience store. I have a 1 soda and chip per month rule. the rest of the time I drink juice or sobe (which I know is sweet too but it's at least a bit better).
At the house I have to stay away from the cheese and crackers and icecream. Dairy and grains are my favorite foods in the world and I will overeat on them fast  I'll switch from my black tea which I take with milk to green which I drink alone (I dont like coffee). half my butter on my toast or less milk on the cereal (I only like whole milk so when I discovered how good almond milk tastes and how much less fattening it is I switched for the summer). I'll talk myself into eating something like an apple with peanutbutter for lunch instead of leftover heavy food or eggs. Or the other day I had one of dad's fresh cucumbers with dressing and it was surprisingly satisfying. When I eat dinner, which is usually kind of heavy in my house cause Dad won't eat during the day and comes home hungry, I'll serve myself one less scoop than I think I want, that usually ends up being just enough. Snacking can actually be good if you snack on the right things and account for it when you eat the main meals. It will keep you from being too hungry at dinner. Whatever you do, avoid eating out. And if you must eat fast food, subways and quiznos are your friend if you get something with a lot of veggies and light dressings :) That's my favorite lunch when I've been working, I have them load it up with peppers and onions and things (pretty much every veggie on the tray) and a few slices of cheese. They usually don't even know how to make the veggie sub so they overload it, which is great lol. It looks like it's going to explode when it's done but it's mostly salad. Yum.

Re: what's wrong with me?

Eating healthily is important, but starvation diets are no fun. I'd say start some regular, demanding, fun physical activity. Being physically fit and eating well is probably better for you than starving, and it will keep you busy (as opposed to sitting around and eating, that's what I tend to do when I'm bored :pop, that and drinking :toast ). Walking, jogging, biking, swimming, some sport or other--doesn't matter what as long as it's something you enjoy, that you can do regularly, and that takes effort. Once you settle into the routine of burning more calories daily, if you're still unhappy with your weight then at that point re-examine what you're eating and see what you could cut out.

In terms of motivation, it's amazing what fitness goals can do--a good friend of mine who's always been on the generous side of normal got much more seriously into rock climbing several months ago and suddenly had a really strong motivation to lose weight (it's the fastest way to become a stronger climber)--now he's super skinny and has had to replace his entire wardrobe!

Re: what's wrong with me?

I don't really think about my weight, ever since I dropped a dress size and put on half a stone in muscle working a yard full time I have decided I don't care what I weigh, however when (like now) my clothes all start to get tight I stop drinking and cut out cheese and butter and that seems to help a lot.

Re: what's wrong with me?

First, there is nothing wrong with you!

I would say, stop trying to lose weight. Find something you like doing that's fun and active or satisfying. Like, much stalls for an impound/rescue, offer to excercise their horses, or volunteer to be the handler for hippotherapy sessions...... there are lots of other non-horse related things too, but these are the things that have kept me in the best shape. When I'm not doing one of the above things? I put on about 10lbs. But if I even THINK that I want to lose some weight? I pack them on like a hoarder.

If you are like me, thinking about it makes it hard to not want what you "can't" have, so I keep busy.

PS - get rid of your TV, and limit your PC-sitting time.

Oh, you guys are all LUCKY - I would give anything to only have to lose 40 or 50 lbs, shoot, even only a 100 would be nice... :? :sad I have learned to love me as I am and just leave the rest of it in the Lord's hands.
It isn't what I eat (less than 900-1,000 a day on avg. and very little sugar/fat/sodium) so much as my RA and COPD combine to make most activities nearly impossible. I do the best I can by walking (using canes or a walker) short distances at a time and then resting/catching my breath. On the days that my RA is doing okay (warm/dry is great), it is too hot or bad air day for the COPD...it is so depressing. :BH :(( ~X(

Re: what's wrong with me?

My biggest problem is I think is that I used to work on horse studs, and then in mining, and being active I guess I never had to think about what I ate. Well I just ate when I wanted!! So I still do that, and most it's been ok, but only now I think it's catching up to me. Well obviously.

So I'm im now I'm OMG I need to loose weight, but got no idea how!!! I''ve now got an office job in the city. So stange :(

It's will all be fine I'm sure. Life style changes. It will work out!!!

Yeah, I'm stuck at a desk most of the day, so it's kinda hard. I did find a website, sparkpeople.com, which seems nice. If nothing else they have some awesome meal ideas.

This might sound really strange, but have you thought of trying the honey/cinnamon routine for your RA?

Yes please, spill the beans on honey and cinnamon! I know cinnamon is good for helping diabetics (daughter-in-law is diabetic, so have been doing some research), but I've not heard of any arthritis connection.

I have used sparkpeople and its a nice site.

I have the other side of the coin... Body image is not easy no matter what size/weight you are.

Hang in there and try to never lose the feeling that your the best looking one in the room. Confidence is sex. ;-)

Re: what's wrong with me?

Well next week I will have dropped a stone - having the baby does that LOL.
But I hope to watch my diet and then let the breast feeding do the rest to begin with.

I do pick a day to make a start and then plan my food diary for the week including some physical activity and allow myself some treats here and there. It does work but whats hard is trying to find me time with 3 kids and now a baby about to arrive. But will have to make it work as when I am fit I feel better and have more energy which is a boost. I love to exercise in the morning as it sets me up for the day.
