What kind of Appaloosa is my horse?

I am thinking a varnish roan? I'm not sure... and suggestions? Also he's like a bay...? Oh appys... and their confusing genetics.

Well, he is varnishing, but defining his pattern would be easier if you have any foal pictures. I am on the fence with how minimal his spotting is if he is homozygous or heterozygous for the Lp. I would guess he is black-based (black or bay) in base color, but appies can do crazy things so I wouldn't bet money on it.

He looks heterozygous LP to me because he does have multiple distinct spots. But the only horses I've seen with their rumps that free of spotting had obvious sabino.

Since he appears to lack leg or face white not caused by LP that part is a odd. I agree with black or agouti for the base coat.

As for pattern genes. Looks like some form of PATN2. Again all just guesses based on other horses and phenotype research.
