what colour would you call him?

I have a 5 yr old mini pony stallion that i saved from being shot by his owner so don't know anything about his breeding but i am trying to figure out his colour. Was gonna get him colour tested but been told there is no testing for 'Palouse' (mini's and ponies are palouse while horses are called Appaloosa). He has the palouse markings on his nostrils, lips and eyes, striped hooves and also has 2 toned penis and anus. What is yr opinion?

He is a brown. Most likely with one copy of the gene that causes appaloosa patterns without a pattern gene (LP). It is possible he could develop more white as he ages. He looks like a nice little pony.

I concur with admin's genetic prognosis. ^

The white flecks, striped hooves and mottled skin points to LP. His dark color may gain more coppery tones as he ages as some black and agouti (bay/brown) based LP horses do.

He does appear to have some white hairs on his (very shiny) backside...so could be Varnish?? The spotting on the lips can be caused by other things but I believe strongly in going for the most obvious first, so, while it may be something other than Appy, it probably is Appy!
Always called my Minis Appies, btw ymwhisle

I doubt this is correct, but here's an idea. What if it's a seal brown horse with a dun gene, and then the appy gene as well? Unless the dorsal stripe is just countershading, I'm definitely seeing an active dun allele (check out the dorsal stripe, as well as the guard hairs on the tail). And then the mottling/roaning/whatnot is due to the appy gene.

So, the genotype would be something similar to this if I'm correct: At/Dn/LP

I hope that makes sense! :)
Thats definitely not a true dorsal IMO.
It doesn't really look like a true dorsal stripe to me either, but what about the guard hairs then?

Can see neither a true dorsal nor any guard hair... just some sun-bleached ends in the mane... There is no dilution of the base color and there are no leg-bars.
Brown with LP IMO.
Whatever you call it - the test for LP should be the same for Minis and other horses...? ymwhisle

Yes it is, in fact it was developed using quite a few Minis as we mix the colours up so much it was a good litmus test!
Minis are called Appies. btw. not Palouse- never heard that one, ever, maybe it is a regional thing?
