What colour is Molly?

critterkeeper Sun, 04/29/2012 - 14:40

Definitely roan. Other than that it is just a guess as I can't really tell her base color from the pixs, but I'm guessing bay pinto with classic roan. What breed is she? That could help narrow down her white patterns (many breeds carry one, two or three white patterns but not all five: tobiano, frame, sabino, splash white and dominate white).

that pix still doesn't show her base color...I have chestnut so dark a lot of people, including a few clueless vets, that think she is a bay because she has black mane and tail (her legs are RED all the way down to her hooves, lol) the best way to tell is by the back of her ears (are they brown with black tips? black? or all red/brown?) that will give you a good idea into her base color, but only testing will tell for sure.

She looks like Appy roan, which would explain the dark spots on her bum and tobiano, not sure about the base color, but I would guess bay.

I didn't even think of Lp...oops...my bad...so yes varnish roan. So yes tobi and lp, and I'd say splash white too. But then with Appy genes, there is no telling about base color...we have all seen "red" Appys that tested black.

Not Roan. IME when Appy and Roan mix all the spots disappear. So Varnish + Tobi + Sabino (probably) The Sabino alone could be responsible for the "roaning", and I am going for a Brown base (I think she does have Varnish in spite of Sabino being able to do that!)

Could she also have appy frosting and snowflake as her back is a lot lighter then the rest of her and she has lots of white spots in her coloured patches

rabbitsfizz Wed, 05/09/2012 - 06:27

Sorry, yes, of course- sometimes we just assume people know these things! Technically she is a Pintaloosa, the "roaning" is caused by Varnish, which is an Appy pattern, my own stallion is similar. She could also have Sabino, but is unlikely to have true Roan (Varnish is often referred to as Varnish roan but it is a different gene) as that would have removed all the spots!
So she is a Pintaloosa, but what base colour? IMO Brown, but possibly Bay.

What I meant was is it possible for her to be, Her base colour + Varnish Roan + Tobiano + Sabino + leopard Spot + Appy Frosting + Snowflake?

rabbitsfizz Wed, 05/09/2012 - 12:28

No. Appy Frosting is Varnish, is Snowflake.
There is no reason why she cannot have Tobiano and Sabino and Appy, though. I do not think she has Leopard, just Varnish.

Is anyone else noticing the blue eyes? Could splash be hiding in there as well?

Threnody Tue, 05/22/2012 - 17:20

One is blue the other is white sclera from LP and/or Pinto. Splash looks like a possibility.

Definitely heterozygous LP varnish roan and tobiano
