What color foal?

Can chestnuts be born with normal dark skin? I think they only ones I've seen have been somewhere between pink and the purple/pumpkin, but never normal dark. This guy has had normal dark skin from day one and he has odd slate blue eyes. His legs are very pale. His tail has some blackish color in it but is mostly silver/blonde. Do I see slate blue eyes? I don't know what I see... he has me confuzzled.

Small update: His body has gotten very red and his legs very silvery. He has several patches of REALLY dark hair showing through where he's nicked his legs. His mane is also now light flaxen or white/silver. Hopefully he will either shed soon and/or we will get good pics.

Nothing good enough to bother posting. The person with the good camera was only visiting and now the owner only has a camera phone or video still and they suck. She says she's going to try to get a new camera soon... and may clip him.

Oh hey! Thanks for reminding me! I know his owner just got a fancy new camera so there should be. Although she says the foals generally don't shed there (in Colorado) since by the time they start thinking about shedding it's already cold, so we may not see shed pics until spring/summer. She said she'd clip him, but he's a bit of a wild thing and she'd need help, which she doesn't have.

I haven't talked to her in a couple of weeks so I'll write tonight and ask if there's anything worth sharing.

Here's a recent photo:

She says his mane is coming in white white (not flaxeny) and the shed spots on his legs are dark. He also has dark ear tips (somewhat visible in that photo, more visible in another photo I didn't save  ).

New photos of his sire are absolute proof that he is silver (IMO of course) so this foal had/has a 75% chance of being silver (albeit he could be red with silver).

I'm sorry but I am still not sure about this one...I can see why you would think it's a silver bay but it's not a clean cut case as far as I can see still could be chestnut with Pangare....can you get them to test for silver and Agouti ??? pretty please :flower

Looks Chestnut here.

Did you ever find out if Chestnuts can be born with black skin?

accphotography Sat, 10/10/2009 - 20:18

Not for sure, no. But I haven't really gone digging. I haven't really seen one with ear tips as clear as this boy's was though.

Those legs are coming in far too dark for chestnut IMO. His mane and tail didn't start this color either and his body color has gotten alot richer.

Just for reference, this was his sire as a foal:

And yes, he's a silver buckskin.

I doubt she will test this one as she's confident he is silver bay now and he will be gelded.

From the early foal pics and compared to the new pics of the OP... I am sure this is chestnut+pangare... ;)

As you know, not all foals look alike. I've seen several silver bay foals born looking chestnut.

I guess we'll just see what happens.
