What Causes Spots in Socks/Stockings and Face Markings?

a friend posted this over at the horse forum she owns. The horse belongs to a client of hers...chestnut Appendix QH the pics were taken with a cell phone, but she said she's going to take her good camera out there sometime in the next week or so hopefully and get better shots of him. What is the proper name for this type of spotting? as one member over at that forum said: He's obviously an appendix crossed with a German Short-haired Pointer..lol

for some reason I always think ermines are just near the hoof....not all over the white of the leg (no clue why I think this) and I've honestly never heard distal spots before....can someone explain the difference(if any)...and yes...still wondering if there is a name for the ones in face white.

I think they are neat looking...can't wait to see a picture of the entire beastie

The spots touching the coronet are ermine spots. The ones on the legs not touching the coronet are distal spots. There IS no name for the spots on the face. I know as I've been looking (my mare has them too).

It is my very strong belief these spots are signs of a white suppressor trying to fight the white off.

Can we PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE see a full body photo, pedigree and maybe parent's photos!!??

Thanks for sharing!!

i'm sure that is what she meant when she posted appendix, QH/TB cross

she said she'll get full body shots and see if she could at least get the sire and dams names or their pedigree copied for her...don't think there is a way to get parents photos as this horse was probably purchased as an adult.

My Vet in TN had a horse with that many spots, I was excercising him for a while, I dont know his pedigree or anything, just a gigantic rump high QH named Dollar. (and by rump high I mean like 6 inches :laugh1 she got him for free).

The grulla colt Slim and his dam and her sire all has tons of spots.

Wow. Fascinating. I can't find anything in the pedigree that tells me much. There is some high white back there, but I didn't find many signs of suppression anywhere. Those first shots really made me question tobiano, but the new pics kinda settled that for me (and the pedigree sealed the deal).

How very, very interesting. I wonder if his owner would be willing to let us add him to out photo gallery as an example of heavy distals.
