Thank you :D It's pretty funny, everyone that visits us is scared of him, but he is the BIGGEST baby. Only time he shows aggression is if I am out walking him and he sees another person or dog that he doesn't know, he will guard me and literally not let me walk any further until he knows it is safe :love

i love wolf hybrids a friend has one but I am told they are more dangerous then actual wolves because they are not scared of people - yours looks like a darling BTW !

We have 2 Leonbergers Mouse 8yrs old and her son Aslan coming up 4 - they both went to Crufts and Aslan got placed there too so we are very proud of him.

Re: What breed of dog do you own ?

i'll have to hunt down pictures tomorrow of my gang...

but..
i've got a weimeraner that we've raised from a 3 week old pup...he's nearing 4 or 5 (can't remember off the top of my head). His momma started attacking her litter when they were just a week or so old. And the people really didn't like bottle feeding after a couple of weeks...so we took one, my moms friend took one and my aunt and her boyfriend took three of 'em! His name is Remington...typical looking wiemy

and my old ladies...an australian shepherd who will be 10 in November(around thanksgiving) and a pomeranian who turns 10 two days after Christmas. The aussie is a red/tan with a bit of white on her and the pom is a red sable. I actually helped deliver the pom when she was born (my mom used to raise them)

our "pound spaniel" Jake....pretty golden color with a bit of white....our best guess is Cocker Spaniel/Brittany

and then my boyfriend and I have a dog over at his house...Cricket...the Chihuahua/Dachshund cross...she is super shiney black with a touch of white.

HG:
see the 3 legged dog in the bg here:
http://www.equine-color.info/index.php?q..." onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
that is the best dog i have ever owned in my entire life. Her name was Ohetos (cannot spell it, lol.)
She was a full siberian husky and thought I was her puppy (that's me with my pony). I still remember the day she came up to me, licked my face, ran off into the woods, and was gone forever. She knew it was her time. My dad later found her and we gave her a proper burial. She was such an amazing dog. I have such respect for huskys, I want another so bad. I have pictures somewhere of her puppies she had one year, they were so cute! It actually snowed that year! In louisiana! I think they were good luck.

Re: What breed of dog do you own ?

I loved my hybrids and wolves...Satin Dreamz (90% red wolf/10%Malamute) & Spirit (my 75% white MacKenzie Valley) actually slept with my hubby and myself, Mekala (50/50 Timber/Rottweiler) slept with my son Ben, Keesha (100% Eastern Grey) slept with son John, and Shiloh (50% MacKenzie Valley, 25% Timber, 25% Malamute) slept with my daughter. All of them got along great and they were real sweethearts (and yes, they loved everyone and all animals).

The only one who was ever a problem was due to not being socialized as a cub, and that was Katie (98% Western Timber - I always questioned her papers because she behaved and looked as pure as the driven snow). She wasn't so much dangerous or even violent as she just didn't associate with any of the others and would let them know they were not welcome in her world.

I wish I hadn't lost all our pixs in the fire (lost house in July '96). The state of NC seized Satin and sent her to Dismal Swamp for a redwolf breeding program; we lost Keesha at the age of 17; Spirit was 16; Mekala and Shiloh were "murdered" my a neighbor - long story, but he got his just deserts (he was a prison guard at the time he killed them. He got 10 yrs in jail because he also shot up a neighbors house at the same time); after that we sent Katie to Wyo. to a pack breeding/relocation project (where she became the pack Alpha female and produced lots of cubs for the project - some of which are now running wild in Yellowstone).

Re: What breed of dog do you own ?

I can't access my photos at work, so will have to post them later, but...

I have a 5 year old grey Alaskan Malamute, Kairyl (pronounced ky rul, got it from the word chiral which has to do with carbons... but I changed the spelling... lol)

2 sisters who's sire is a leonberger and dam is 1/2 newfy and 1/2 pryenean mastiff, they are... 3 years now I believe. Denver is black and Philly is seal. My friend doesn't own the parents, but raised the litter (long story). We found the litter interesting, because daddy of course is the typical leo color, and momma is mainly white with black patches. Of 13 pups, IIRC 2 are solid black like Denver, 2 are seals like Philly, and the remainder are brindle!

and 6 Miniature Australian Shepherds:
Buddjet is.... 6? y/o black tri male
Rylie is 2 y/o red merle male
Toby is 1 y/o black tri (minimal white) male, and overgrew his mini status! LOL So I guess he's just an Australian Shepherd now ;)
Roxi is 1 y/o black tri (minimal white) female
Rumor is going to be 2 years this fall, blue merle female
and Keno is 9 week red tri male

It is great to see and hear what breeds of dogs people have. For most, I would never have picked that to go with their online personality. :o (as if one can guess that, right?)

If you would rephrase that to the dam being black with white patches, then it turns into totally logical. ;) The Leo is kk, the dam is Kkbr. The dams black (K)can easily hide brindle (kbr) which is recessive to (this form of) black but dominant over kk (no black patterns displayed) Like in horses, white patterns go over a base color, regardless of appearance.

Re: What breed of dog do you own ?

Lipi, those are wonderful pictures of your Leos! I spent about 40 minutes on the phone with the breeder last night getting more information. We have an appointment to go meet her dogs on July 26th. My goodness, they are big! It's going to take some getting used to! I still cannot believe my husband wants one, with all the shedding--it's why he said he didn't want another husky. But I guess if it's a breed he really likes, he'll put up with it. (But you KNOW who's going to be doing all the brushing, right? That's right, ME!)

Krickette, that's a very beautiful husky in your photo. Nayana is so wonderful with Keira, we're very fortunate to have such a great dog. They really are best friends, so I sincerely hope Nayana lives many more years so Keira can truly remember her the way you do your dog. She's only 8, so I'm hoping we have 6 or 7 years to go!

The only dog color genetics I understand are those colors found in Australian Shepherds (and I will limit to really only understanding those in the breed standard, since there are other colors that can happen that aren't in the standard). But we expected pups to have white on them, since the mom has so much! Well, a couple have a tiny bit on the chest and/or toes, one had some more white (photos to follow). Maybe it's more correct to call her black with white patches, but phenotypically, she is white with black patches (and spots) ;) Plus we thought some might be leo colored! LOL :) Someone (maybe it was you, I completely forget WHERE I asked about it... either the old forum or a dog genetic email list?) explained how the seals came about, although I don't remember what was explained haha ;)

Fabulous dogs - love the Spitz breeds and Cricket is SO cute - WANT !!

Chey your Leo crosses are kinda funny looking because they are SO similar except for colour !...they are great. My friend breeds Blonde Leos and they are very striking.

Re: What breed of dog do you own ?

Ok well I guess I'll finally post a couple of doggie pics.

The Doppy lookin' fellow on the couch is Moby. He's a bluetick coonhound. He was supposed to be my husbands hunting dog but hubby has yet to take him hunting so atm he's my dog. His personality is just like he looks in the picture.

The yellow dog is Clyde. Kasey took his photo and I couldn't find any others since he's grown. He's supposed to be 1/2 pit bull and 1/2 German Shepard. He's defiantly got the pit part as I saw his dam and I can believe he's part Shepard just by the look of him. I got him for my husband to replace his big black dog that had passed away unexpectedly. I keep telling hubby he should train him for agility trials as he's very high drive and food oriented. He keeps all the wild critters away from my chickens. I actually have two batches of baby chicks that I think might actually make adulthood for the first time since I got chickens 3 yrs ago (I'm actually down to 3 hens from something like 20 and have tried numerous time to raise babies with out success). Usually the raccoons and the possums take out the chicks.

When I saw the picture, I thought she was a Landseer. 8-) But you said newf x pyr. :o and the Landseer is not recognized over here (I think)

Plus we thought some might be leo colored! LOL :) Someone (maybe it was you, I completely forget WHERE I asked about it... either the old forum or a dog genetic email list?) explained how the seals came about, although I don't remember what was explained haha

Leo color is only possible if you turn the black (K) off. The dam has K and kbr. Both dominant over the sire's kk. So with each pup getting either K or kbr from the dam, you cannot get any that display the recessive kk. ;)
The seal (I don't think it was me) would be a 'bad black'. The K locus does cover the Ay from the Leo, but modifiers lessen the intensity and leaves the Ay partially visible. The A locus is also visible under the brindle, of course. (the 'red' between the stripes)

I'll see if I can get a picture from her but they are basically the same colour as a Golden Retriever with a black mask.

Sounds like a clear Ay. Same as the regular leo's, but less the black hairtips that in some breeds is known as 'charbonne'.

Yes on the pit-part. "I don't think so" on the GSD. ;) Not only in the looks department, but you have you a nice dillute there and GSD's do not have that and for a dillute, it still takes two. 8-) (dd)

Re: What breed of dog do you own ?

i've noticed sometimes when people say shepherd, most people think GSD....

I know several years ago our homeowners insurance had a fit because we had "a shepherd"....took lots of pictures, a vet visit/letter from vet and our insurance agent to come over and meet my australian shepherd before they were convinced I didn't have a "high risk" German Shepherd.

Re: What breed of dog do you own ?

 That is because that is the most usual and accepted sticker for the GSD. ;) There are other 'shepherds' that are even more high risk than a GSD. But they are referred to under their full name or a different abbreviation. For Australian shepherds, I have really only heard "aussie" never "shepherd'. Nobody gets visions of an anatolian when the word shepherd is used, though that one too has the affix.

FWIW, when looking at Daylenes dillute, I would guess Pit x lab. (the latter being ee/bb) but it is hard to even venture a guess based on that one picture.

it was funny when we listed our dogs we had.....they totally missed the Australian in front of the Shepherd and called my mom up and flipped! She couldn't believe it. Maybe they thought we had a GSD from Australia or something *giggles*

When I see pyr, to me that's great pyrenese, want to make sure it's clarified the mom is newfy x pyrenean mastiff :)

Very interesting info, thank you! :) Hehe so my Philly is a bad black :) I love the color, sure is neat :) I would've picked a seal or brindle, but hubby picked Denver, the black, and since HE was the one who decided we had to have one of the pups, I went with his choice. Then also ended up with one of my choices anyhow so it all worked out! :)

VL, question for ya ! Einsigg who designed the Leos 150 yrs ago is said to have crossed a Landseer with a Pyr and a St. Bernard - but there is some controversy that you cant get the resulting colouring of the Leos from this cross and that they GSD must have been involved - what do ya think ?

 But I don't know that much about dog genetics!
With that being said, I do think that it is possible. I need to pull up pics of St Bernards (how sad it that?) to determine if they are Ay with black tips, or a lower allele on the locus like at. For the landseer, I would say sure: the K locus can very well cover up a beautiful Ay, so all you would need it a partner who in the next generations knocks the k locus down to kk and voila....For the Pyr, I am thinking that all you need it so turn the E locus back on, which the above (landseer and StBernard) can and will do. At this point, I would say that I don't see why they could not be the ancestors.
As for the GSD. They don't usually come in Ay, but mostly the lower allele aw (sable) at, (black and tan)or aa (recessive black) or combinations of those. As you know it is not easy to move back up from recessive alleles to dominant ones, unless you partner gives you a step up. I would pick Einsigg's explanation over the GSD any day of the week. :o

:? Red nosed would signal bb dillute. I don't know mom, but yes, I could see your pup containing a dash of that. How cool would that be! Not a half breed, but a full breed after all. ;) :laugh1

I own a Fabulous German Shepherd, Flynn :love he is so gentle and intelligent (as all the breed are really) and 8 miniature long haired Dachshunds!!! Most of them are cream but we also have a black and cream stud dog as well as a cream stud dog who is Flynn`s best friend :D and 2 shaded red bitches. They ALL live in the house as I dont believe in keeping a dog permanantly outside, they should be part of the family in my opinion. So anyway, here is a pic of our canine family (havent included my son`s whippet lol) and a pic of puppies from a litter last year!!
