What is this????

My mare just all of a sudden developed these spots this spring (Australia). She has a matching one on the other side in the same place. They are not marks from irritation or halter rubbing etc.

I haven't really got a clue. I would just say it is a random appearance of white hairs. I have known older horses who have developed roaning, specifically around the throatlatch and jowl area, and it looks quite odd, but there is no explanation for it.

I was going to ask if she was an old girl as I've noticed some of the oldies get grey on their faces, especially around the eye/temple area. If she's not an old girl, I have no idea.

Thanks. No, she is not an old mare, so not age related.
I just thought it was really odd, these are not small white spots they are quite large patches, at least a couple of inches across
& are roaned looking rather than solid, but a definite circular type shape.

:rofl Oh, well I guess I just have a weird horse with spots on its head.

:booty LOL, No Chance of silver bay(I wish).

Yes, I would be confident to say sabino.
Here is a pic with her face markings & on one foot she has one of those funny
incomplete socks that I seem to get often on my sabino babies. Ie white wrapped round
only part of the foot & speared.
She does actually have a couple of other white spots on her body, but they are not like the ones
on her head. They are small & solid white.

One of my clients horses has a spot like that on his neck, just white hairs and a smaller one on his hip. His entire body has scattered white hairs:back, belly, rear, neck, everywhere except legs and tail, just like someone sprinkled salt on him. He has a blaze but no socks at all. *shrug* I think he's around 8.

She's pretty extraordinary. A jaw dropping, head scratching oddity. :rofl
