what age do you think its ok to show a foal ? my mini foals are 2 months old and of course thats too young , would 4-5 months be OK ? and from these pics which do you think is the better one to show ? I know theyre not ideal but take a look anyway

The second chesnut one is the one I'd show, the first one has great colour but does not currently look leggy enough..things may change though.

Do they need to be leggy to show?

I've taken foals to shows at nearly any age, so I'd show a 2 month old on the mare? Or do you mean what age to show as a weanling?

They are all very cute!! :-D
I'm not sure for showing but I like the last foal, and the first pinto is extra cute!

They are supposed to look like horses not ponies so leggy is good and the current Judges favour them....not sure I always agree though. ;-)

No, I didn't clip the foals. Mine are shetlands and mini ponies (not mini horses) so we aren't allowed to clip them anyway. All the pony shows I go to actually say no clipping of foals for all the breeds, but if they are usually clipped for mini horses you might have to?

Re: updated pics of my foals

I do not show foals.
I do not clip foals.
That is the start and the finish of it, for me.
Nowadays I would not even take a foal to a show on the mare...especially not on the mare as you do not know what animals is carrying something nasty like flu and that can carry off a baby.
I honestly think a year old is plenty early enough to start.
Let them be babies and just grow and play that first year, if you clip that late they will be in all winter.

Re: updated pics of my foals

Is it uncommon to have mares with foals at foot shown where you are? I never thought much of it. The bigger shows here have classes for the brood mares and separate judging for the foal at foot and those classes seem well suppported? I must say we don't do it much, but if one of our good show mares is put in foal we keep showing her.

We have HUGE foal shows for the weanlings in autumn, I mean there are everywhere. Every district has at least one foal specific show. I never thought about that being a bad thing! All the foal show programs I've seen though do say no body clipping.

Ive decided not to show them , the norm does seem to be to clip them and I wont clip one that young , and youre right RF there are alot of nasty bugs around plus I have plenty of others to keep me busy
Thanks for the imput :-)

Might be safer for foals in Australia/NZ (as super bio isolated countries), Danni. In the old world and the americas there are too many paths for ickies to race in.

Re: updated pics of my foals

I have shown a couple of my foals on the mare and dont clip them. They only went to 2 shows each and were at least 2 - 3months old before showing.
