Tobiano

Who here has knowledge of Tobiano patterns being affected by other patterns, specifically Splash and Sabino? I had always thought that patterns did not interact??? I realise that more than one pattern ups the chances of more white on the body or other areas, but I had thought that this was because each pattern was supplying it's own white, not because one pattern was actually being affected by another....

Tobiano appears to suppress face white caused by sabino and splash, This can cause a badger faces in some cases.

While Splash combined with tobiano appears to like making larger areas of body white, while supressing face white. Some can appear like oreos with this interaction.

He's a chimera but he also has this pattern expression: http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9…

Splash and sabino when combined together appear to cause sabino suppressing splash from expressing around the eyes.

Those are the main interactions people have noticed that I've heard.

I have a question to add to this thread as well - are "oreo" look-a-like horses almost always splash/tobiano combinations? Or can you get the same look on a normal tobi?

Also, do splashes always have to have facial markings? Or not?

Thanks :)

I don't know about the oreo's, but they have had completely solid horses test positive for splashed white.

I am still not convinced about the Splash test- I guess it is more reliable if it is positive than if it is negative- did the "solid" horses have brown eyes as well?

As to the "oreo" horses, if it has face white it is not just Tobiano- in fact there are not that many single pattern horses out there as people have been crossing them for so long that the patterns have become all mixed up.

This was a SW1 hetero mare, two brown eyes

Heres another Gotland pony, completely solid and produced a HZ SW1 foal, who was actually pretty minimal for being HZ, but it seems the Gotlands in particular have some serious white suppression genes http://www.gotlandsruss.se/Skotte492.htm (the foal http://migrated.ifokus.se/uploads/5f1/5…)
Not sure the breed on this mare, but she is also SW1 http://colorgenetics.info/equine/sites/…
So both splash and frame can be recessive, how about sabino and tobiano?
Neither splash nor frame are recessive. They just don't always show. Same with Sabino. It's not really true of tobiano, at least in big horses, though it does sometimes happen.
