TB with white (was Chloe's mystery color change)

Sorry, the roaning just doesn't show up real well with Djinn's coat color. (And she's been fighting with her daughter...hence she's a bit chewed up!) [url=https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.200907936617160.50327.1696736… of Djinn & Will 'O[/url] The roaning didn't come out clearly on Will'O. There is a patch in the middle of her neck. It just doesn't show up real well in the light...of course she had also been rolling in the dirt. Will 'O has 5 or 6 different roan patches like this, although this one is the largest. I had always thought that Djinn was "sabino" because that's what I was told back when I registered her with APHA. Will 'O sire is black. I believe he has been tested. Both of Djinn's parents were chestnut.

Djinn's face looks like it could be DW. Any full body shots? I tend to be able to identify patterns better if I can add everything together in one picture.

Also, random aside: I noticed you are into driving and in the PNW. My pony and I are heading back the the eastside next week and I have been thinking of really getting into the driving community more (especially since the pony is a sale project). Are you familiar with any good clubs/groups in the area.

Equestrians Institute is *somewhat* active. I can certainly put you in touch with drivers in the area.

I've attached a photo of Djinn. It's a few years old and doesn't show the roaning but does let you see a profile and get a feel for the markings. The roaning has been progressive. At the time this was taken, she had roan spots, but not yet much full body roaning.

I have purchased semen for both Djinn and her daughter for this year -- a Knabstrupper. I really like his body style and disposition -- didn't give a lot of thought to color. Now I'm wondering what may happen if/when Djinn's white meets the stallion's leopard.

I can see DW in her, just a lower expression of it. Appaloosa and KIT mutations don't seem to affect the expression of one another. It would be like you applied one on top of the other.

What label would you give them? Djinn is registered with JC as chestnut. APHA has her as overo (yes, I KNOW but at the time there wasn't any other choice). What should she be called (from a color perspective)?

Will 'O is registered as a dark bay. Is that the correct label?

Chloe is registered as a Black/White tobiano. What should she be described as?

I would call Djinn a dominant white chestnut, Will 'O a brown (maybe DW, but the black gene may be suppressing it) and Chloe a brown tobiano.

Accuracy counts!

BTW -- Chloe's coat color continues to evolve. Interestingly, the brown is now coming strongly through. As she sheds out more, the brown shows more and more. The roaning has also continued to evolve/expand - now includes the neck and is starting on the head. In the past, her body color on her neck was the same as her mane black -- no longer the case. Her neck is now obviously lighter in shade.

The photo was taken two days ago. She's lighter now - and the roaned areas grow each day.

I guess I *should* have considered the possibility of roaning after the foal shedding. Djinn's roaning has been progressive and is still changing.

Yep, KIT/sabino/DW are the mutations that tend to progress in roaning. Classic roan will vary by season, but is static throughout life.
